🍰 Here I will draw upon cakes being university league tables (bear with me on this one!).

The ingredients will represent the measures that make up a university’s place on the league tables.

Here goes…

Firstly, THE TIMES AND SUNDAY TIMES GOOD UNIVERSITY GUIDE

🍓 The ingredients are student satisfaction, teaching quality, research quality, graduate prospects, entry standards and degree outcomes.

🍓 This results in a cake that brings together academic performance and the student experience.

Secondly, THE GUARDIAN UNIVERSITY GUIDE

🍒 The ingredients are student satisfaction, teaching quality, student to staff ratios and career prospects.

🍒This results in a cake which is more about the student experience.

Thirdly, THE COMPLETE UNIVERSITY GUIDE

🫐 The ingredients are entry standards, student satisfaction, research quality, graduate prospects and continuation rates.

🫐 This results in a cake that has a broader picture of university performance across several measures.

🫐 So in a nutshell, some ingredients are the same but the measures vary for each with a scattering of an ingredient unique to that cake. Therefore, it’s critical not to favour one cake (the league table).

🍰 The message here is don’t choose your university based on one league table alone. Look at the measures, explore your subject, and think about what matters to YOU!

🎓 University league tables: which one should you trust?

If you’re researching universities, you’ll quickly come across three of the UK’s main league tables:

📊 The Times Higher Education League Table

📚 The Guardian University Guide

🎓 The Complete University Guide (CUG)

But here’s the important bit… they can rank the same university very differently. 👀

Why? Because they use different measures, weightings and, importantly, different survey questions.

So before you choose a university based on its league table position, it’s worth looking beyond the headline number.

I’ll be saying more about this later this week.
