“Disappointment is such a delicious emotion” from the series “Deny Me And Be Doomed”.

Sure, having weekend plans or dinner reservations come to fruition sounds nice. But do those really compare to the feeling of superiority when the other person forgets or double books? Because surely I could never, EVER, possibly let someone down the same way…

This was the most vulnerable piece included in EMOTIONAL CAPITAL in June (though there was another that was a very close second).

Judith slaying Holofernes has been reinterpreted for centuries. When it suddenly crossed my mind that the subject would be fitting for this show, I slashed out the base layers of the painting in an hour. Then I immediately started to panic in a way I’d never experienced during art-making.

I was excited by what I was seeing, but also, immediately filled with terror because it was so graphic. But intimate. A flood of emotions around “I can’t believe I did this it’s so moving I must show it to everyone” and the persistent, nagging “but what will they think?”

It’s actually exhilarating to think we can create something that elicits such complex emotions and force us to confront our biggest fears. “What will they think?” sounds like an abstract concern, but if I break it down, “they” usually ends up being 1 or 2 specific people.

A couple days after I started the piece, my mom came to visit my studio. I decided to leave the painting visible and see what she had to say. After taking in everything else in the space, I saw her linger on it. She quietly said “That one looks kind of melancholy. Like it’s an intimate moment, but also kind of sad.” I gave her the context of the painting and she was already familiar with Judith.

Red is rage, red is passion. All of the other pieces in EMOTIONAL CAPITAL have red as the dominant colour; this is the only one that is mostly blue. In fact, the red is muted and withheld, like maybe I was trying to capture another feeling that underlies the brutal subject matter. taken in Vancouver, British Columbia by @yourcreativemuse_
