It’s Childhood Cancer Awareness Month! McKenna is kicking off her fundraising campaign for the @teamscottcares.
The CARES Foundation is **rewriting the story of cancer to transform survivorship into a life fully lived. Established in 2014 as a national foundation, CARES - Cancer Alliance for Research Education and Survivorship - is driven by a bold mission: to fund innovative, patient-centered, targeted treatments that fight cancer while preserving quality of life. We invest in cutting-edge research that reduces debilitating side effects and supports the whole person - during treatment and throughout survivorship. Our goal is to extend and improve the lives of cancer patients and their families.** (from their website)
We witnessed first hand the toxic treatments Cora had to undergo, but we also witnessed an immunotherapy drug (Blina) become a frontline treatment due to research and clinical trials.
This is McKenna’s 5th skating in the Scott Hamilton and Friends show at Bridgestone Arena. It’s become such an important part of her skating. Please consider donating towards her $3,000 goal.

On January 12th, 2024, our beautiful daughter, Cora, was diagnosed with childhood leukemia (High Risk B-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia). We have been overwhelmed with the support and love from our family & friends. I still can’t believe that a month ago we were living life completely normal and then crash our world fell apart.
We welcome all the prayers, support, love, positive vibes people have got for us. We have a long road ahead of us.

We always ate pretty healthy in our home. We bought organic…but we bought it from big chain grocery stores. I thought I was buying the right things.
When Cora got cancer, we did a 180. We purchase meat from local farms only now. We know where the animals came from and what they ate and how they are processed. We buy farm fresh eggs from a friend. I buy cream from a local dairy and make our own butter. The animals are humanely raised and well taken care of until they are slaughtered. They are processed locally. As much as I love animals, I also eat meat. It’s important to me to know how they are taken care of and what they eat.
We try and buy what is in season. We shop as much as possible from our local farm store or farmers markets. We buy produce free from pesticides (looking at you and your ā€œorganicā€ berries @driscollsberry). We buy our sourdough bread from a local friend who makes it. Meats are cooked in the butter I make.
We aren’t perfect, we still shop chain grocery stores for certain items ….but when you know better you do better.

I wouldn’t wish cancer on anyone, but I would wish the perspective. Especially childhood cancer. I bet if I polled everyone, you wouldn’t want your child to have cancer…but you absolutely give your opinion on what you would do if it happened to you. I’m here to tell you, until it does…you have no idea what you would truly do.

We had so many people rally around us, donated money and gifts for the kids, filled Amazon wish list. Unfortunately though, we also had people who broke me. People who I called friends that betrayed me. Friends who judged how I handled the absolute worst chapter of my life.

I remember one particular night I posted an instagram story about my pain and grief of being a childhood cancer mom. I was laying next to my bald 5 year old who had an NG tube in her nose. I listened to the sound of her supplemental feeding machine. My phone dinged…a Facebook message from a friend. It was a reply to my story. I was hopeful to see loving, encouraging words…I needed them. Instead, it was a name, address, and phone number to a therapist. That’s it. No encouragement. No ā€œI’m so sorry you’re going through this. No ā€œwhat can I do.ā€ Just a therapist’s information. Not even encouraging, heartfelt words to go with it. I was sick to my stomach. Now I hurt even worse. I felt more angry. More alone. This ā€œfriendā€ not once helped us. Not once watched MK, not once brought us dinner, or even just sat with me and cried. She was a ā€œlet me know if you need anythingā€ person and then never actually did anything. I unfriended her on the spot. I had no room in my life for ā€œfriendsā€ like this. If you can’t walk through this with me, then I no longer have space for you in my life.

So, while I don’t wish this on anyone, I do wish the perspective. So you know how to be better when someone else is going through a valley. I wish people the perspective so they know how to be more empathetic. The perspective so you know how to be there for someone else. The perspective so you know what not to do and what not to say.

Bottom line, until you have been through this, you will never know what it’s like. So be kind.

When Cora rang the bell back in April, a child life specialist went to let some of the inpatient nurses know she was about to ring the bell. Cora knew if they know WHO was about to ring the bell they would come out. 🤣🤣

I wish I could go back to a time we didn’t personally know what childhood cancer was. To a time in our lives fevers were just a symptom of a virus or small bacterial infection. That a cranky, emotional kiddo meant she was just tired from a busy day. Now it triggers concerns of relapse, anxiety pains in the pit of my stomach, sometimes a panic attack or sobbing in the shower.

On this day back in 2023, I was coordinating a wedding for a friend back in Michigan. The girls and I made the trip up from Nashville a few days before. Cora had been experiencing on and off elevated temperatures (99.5-99.8) for few days (but not true fevers of 100.4. This moment here is a video I captured of Cora with my dad dancing at the reception. She had fallen asleep in the car on the way to the wedding, she was exhausted during the reception and only wanted to be held. My vibrant, wild, 4 year old was not herself. Knowing Cora, she should have been running around with other kids and dancing wild on the dance floor. I was concerned because I had no clue what was going on. She would be happy and normal and then down for the count. She was emotional and clingy. The signs were there but we didn’t know it yet.
Thinking back, I remember being worried. I remember feeling like something was really wrong because this was NOT my typical Cora. Cora has always been full throttle, on level 10….and then she wasn’t. It didn’t feel like all the other times she had been sick.
It took months of pediatrician visits, questioning his ā€œit’s only a virusā€ diagnosis, arguing with an ER doctor over a blood test he didn’t think she needed before I got answers.

Mamas, trust your gut. You know them best. Doctors…stop thinking you know everything because of what you were taught in med school. Believe the Mamas when we say something is wrong.

This moment was our lottery winning moment. On April 21st 2026, our 7 year old had her last intravenous chemo through her port and rang the bell after 27 months of chemotherapy treatment for B-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.
I remember on January 12th, 2024 when Cora was diagnosed thinkingā€¦ā€2.5 years!! We have 2.5 YEARS of treatment?!ā€ The tunnel had no light. When I thought, my 4 year old will be almost 7, that tunnel seemed even longer. Then there we were…we got to be the ones hearing the ā€œno more chemo songā€ and ringing the bell.
For those in the trenches, newly diagnosed…I’m praying for you. Praying for your journey. Praying this lottery winning moment comes for you too!
