I’m not arguing with you-Expats are immigrants. And the sooner you tell yourself that you’re an immigrant, the easier your time abroad will be.

The word expat connotes living by the 🏖️ , drinking cocktails 🍹 and doing a few hours of work everyday. The word immigrant makes you think of the opposite– 😓 , sacrifices😭, homesickness 🏡, loss of culture. So when you label yourself an expat but find yourself experiencing the struggles of an immigrant (as most people do), it becomes confusing because your brain doesn’t understand why it’s so difficult.

It’s so difficult because it’s supposed to be. You’re an immigrant. You’ve just moved your entire life to another country✈️. That’s a huge feat! And will come with many challenges. When you call yourself an expat, you mentally assume it’s going to be easier. It’s not. Save yourself the trouble!

I meet so many expats, especially from the UK, who are on their working holiday visa here in Australia, who have been shocked by how difficult it is adjusting to living in Australia.

Life can be so beautiful when you make that move abroad but life is all about balance so the happiest of times (beach 🥳 , rooftop 🍷 , sightseeing🌎) will be met with the saddest (waves of homesickness, culture shocks etc) and if you call yourself an immigrant, the blows that naturally come will feel so much lighter and manageable because you mentally prepared yourself your hardships. ☺️

I moved to Australia in 2024 not realising I was depressed before I boarded the plane. I collapsed mentally and it took 2 years before I felt a semblance of happiness again.

There are many things I would do differently but I’m here now. Thankfully I’m better but if you’re not and you are currently suffering from depression, it gets better. Please please hang in there, take every single day as it comes and know that it takes time and a lot of internal work.

To any expats, immigrants, or even people who are none of those things, happiness will find you again. I am proof ❤️❤️❤️❤️

My DM’s are always open too!

If you think this way you are being a silly goose 🙃

Some tough love for native English speakers (who consider themselves expats)! Thinking that speaking English is going to be some kind of advantage for you when you’re looking for jobs, or thinking that it will make the job searching process easier, is just dumb.

I was also guilty of this when I moved from London to Australia. And I learnt quickly that my ability to English was nothing more than the bare minimum. It will not help. It will not get you ahead. You’re starting out at ground zero just like everyone else. In this economy, the jobs are limited and the competition is fierce!

So, no you can’t speak english. You my friend can only speak Sharkalab. That last sentence will only make sense if you watched the video till the end 😌

The dumbest thing I have ever and hopefully will ever do is not evaluate my mental health before I moved to Australia. It led to two unnecessarily hellish years!!

I’m depression free now. And my mental health is lightyears away from what it was. Yayyyyy. But please learn from me , my loves! Ask yourself the tough questions please ❤️

Living in Australia has made me less selfish and it’s the most interesting thing. Londoners are selfish as heck!!! We’re just raised to think of yourself and yourself only. Sad but understandable given that the dog eat dog nature of the city.

It’s just what we’re taught but Australia has taught me to undo this learning. For example, If you’re in the supermarket and you see something on the floor, pick it up.

It sounds so simple but when you’re raised a completely opposite way, it’s so strange to experience the aussie way of living.

Depression tip #3❤️

I know the thought of going outside feels like climbing a mountain on the worst days, a ridiculous use of what little energy you have on the okay ones, but I want you to know it will help.

It won’t fix it, butttt your body needs it. Your mind needs it. Your soul too.

When I moved to Australia from London 2.5 years ago, my mental health was in tatters and during thr depths of my depressions all alone in Australia, there is not one and I mean one time I went outside and regretted it. Not one.

Please, please go out. Even if just for a few minutes xxx

Living in Australia makes me realise what an awful person I was in the UK. Before you flog me, all Londoners are awful. It’s literally part of London culture that you look out for yourself and yourself only.

I can’t wait to move back next year when my Australian working holiday visa is over but I’m so aware that I might fall back into old London habits which I don’t want to do but when everyone around is selfish, it’s hard not to be too.
