To round out the grid, here are a few series of patterns I found while scanning photos this past month. My favorites were of Paw and her various cameras, Paw cutting many cakes through the years, Paw laughin’ and hollerin’ at someone out of frame, and the rare few photos of Paw alone, not hiding behind anyone or anything and just being her silly, delightful self 💛 by @yourhighness336

Paw was the epitome of what folks in my industry would call “a strong female character”. She was beautiful, intelligent, ambitious, and complicated. In true gemini fashion, Paw embodied the duality of being human.

She was a professor’s wife, dressed tastefully with coiffed hair and a perfectly planned dinner party; but she was also Rosie from the streets of Chinatown with a sailor’s mouth, who would absolutely go toe to toe if someone crossed a line.

One minute she’ll tell you the harsh truth in cold terms sending you into a spiral of existential dread, and the next she’ll envelop you in a warm hug that instantly grounds you in the here and now, reminding you of who you are and that you are loved.

Paw often spoke with absolute certainty and confidence, but also kept a curious and open mind. She thrived in lively debates about world politics and was equally delighted by singing animatronic stuffed animals from CVS.

Paw had such a strong presence that it was impossible to ignore her. She filled rooms physically, with her booming voice and dynamic laughter; whipping out her travel cane with a crack and theatrically hobbling her way to the front of the line. She was big and she was loud. But even her small moments of silence spoke volumes. She could give a whole classroom of 3rd graders one quiet look; and they would all shut up and sit straight without any quiet coyote nonsense.

Paw was a fiercely independent woman, yet constantly surrounded by people. She actively built circles of life long friendship, fueled by meals and activities together. She fought hard for causes she believed in. She was ahead of her time, pushing boundaries in education, politics, and what it meant to be a woman of color born in America.

After over a decade of dinners together every Tuesday and Thursday, I’ve collected quite a few lessons. But my biggest takeaway from my time with Paw, is to allow for all the contradictions of being a person. To see the complications of life, do what you can with what you can control, then let the rest take you on an adventure. And to say to yourself every night before going to bed: every day, in every way, I’m getting better and better. by @yourhighness336

Rosie Mowha Lee Soohoo was born in San Francisco, CA on June 18, 1937. She was the youngest of six, and grew up in the Bay Area alongside her two brothers and three sisters.

Rosie graduated from the prestigious Lowell High School in San Francisco and went on to obtain a BS in Physiology at UC Berkeley. She met her husband Dr. Ronald Soohoo through mutual friends while he was pursuing his PhD at Stanford University.

Rosie and Ronald married in 1957 and initially lived in Monte Sereno, CA. They then moved to the East Coast settling in Cambridge, MA where Ronald worked at MIT. They welcomed their first born daughter while on the East Coast.

The couple moved back to the West Coast to Pasadena, CA when Ronald was offered a professorship at Caltech in 1961. They welcomed a son in 1963 while in Southern California. They made their final move to Northern California when Ronald became founding Chairman of the Electrical Engineering Department at UC Davis (and first Asian American Chairman in the history of the UC system).

Rosie was very active in University Farm Circle which acted as a social and support group for faculty spouses. She was elected as President of the organization in 1969. She was also a founder of the Davis Chinese Association. Rosie also served on the Friends of Mondavi Center Board and established the DCA scholarship endowment fund.

In addition, she focused on raising her children, supporting Ron in his university activities, and building community through hosting events. As her children became teenagers, Rosie obtained a dual-degree from UC Davis with a Master’s Degree in Education and East Asian Studies along with an additional MA degree in Educational Counseling from the University of La Verne.

She embarked on an 18-year career first teaching the Chinese Language to high school students in the San Juan Unified School District and later 3rd grade at Del Paso Manor Elementary in Sacramento. In parallel, Rosie also served on multiple advisory councils and committees at the State and District levels.

After retirement, Rosie and Ron traveled, spent time with family, and lived their final years at the University Retirement Community in Davis. by @yourhighness336
