This Cyber Security Awareness Month, ask yourself: Do I use the same password to access more than one website?

This could include your email accounts, online shopping accounts, work systems and any other online accounts.

If you do, set yourself the task of updating each password so they are unique, which makes it much harder for your accounts to be hacked. by @yourmarketspaceuk

It is often said that a picture paints a thousand words and this is true when it comes to websites as a picture or diagram usually works much better than a block of text.

During a recent client project we turned some text for a step by step process into a timeline diagram making the information much easier to digest. The client even commented that they had never thought of presenting the information like this and it definitely had to be part of the website.

Myth: a website is just for selling products or services.

Fact: whilst this is partially true, websites can be used to educate people, provide information, support communities, share knowledge, showcase research or project findings.

The important thing is to ensure that your website is built for the correct purpose and works for the audience it serves.

Fact

There are some website designers such as ourselves who offer mentoring and guidance for people who want to build a website themselves.

A website menu should not have more than five to six items in it so your users are not presented with too many choices.

If you have too many choices this increases confusion and can mean a user is not sure which item to click and so may leave your website altogether.

This does not mean that you create lots of sub menus underneath the main menu items as again this can lead to information overload for users.

Take some time to review your website menu and if it does have more than five to six items, consider which ones you can remove. by @yourmarketspaceuk

Your homepage is the shop window for your website.

It should contain enough information to invite people in without being overly cluttered and stuffed with everything.

A clear homepage should briefly explain what you do and direct users to the relevant sections to find out more.
