I saw my heroes again, in my favorite city, surrounded by my favorite scene of people, and also my dad lol (thank you again dad for coming along for the trip :))

Got some video footage (that “NOOO” in the Minsk video is me unfortunately im so sorry)

But I also was handed the setlist after using whatever was left of my voice to beg for one LOL so im super pumped about that and I will cherish it forever

I will also cherish the fact that this is probably one of the most fun times I’ve had this year… but at a cost… like, 1/16th of one of my teeth but I actually can’t find which one and it’s a little chip so maybe it’ll be fine 😬

I also met another Gavin, but with an E, not an I.

I’m Covered in sweat, and stink, while eating a real philly cheesesteak, like a REAL real one while typing this out. I thank you for reading, and thank you Snowing for still playing, and I LOVED bear vs shark’s set, I didn’t know they get GOOFY like that but I LOVE IT!!

Street Smart Cyclist - Discography (2014)

Street Smart Cyclist, was at its biggest, a 6-Piece, and in its end, a 5-Piece emo band from around Lehigh Valley/Kutztown/Bethlehem that, despite their short run and constant lineup changes, hit just as hard as their spiritual successors that came after.

Coming from the basements and cafe’s of the early 2000s northeastern hardcore scene, SSC gathered fellas from punk band “Mercs”, Emoviolence act, “Harrison Bergeron”, post-hardcore/screamo band “Storm The Bastille”, and punk outfit “Audio Recording Club” to try and capture the same lighting that their midwestern forefathers had with the likes the Kinsella brothers and their many memorable, catchy twinkletunes. With the sporadic energy of frontman, John Galm, and the intricacies and mathy elements from the Geeting Brothers on guitar and drums, Street Smart Cyclist will have you yelling and clapping along with them in the car ride the same way you do for that ONE part of Snowing’s “Sam Rudich”. Members of SSC went to form Snowing, Boy Problems, and Slow Warm Death.

I had first discovered Snowing through another artist’s cover of “Important Things” and Snowing’s song structures and dynamics along with how crazy people went for them when live naturally sucked me in. However I wasnt familiar with how much the members of Snowing and their friends were doing before they started some of their biggest bands they were ever in. So when I heard the intro of “Hoods Up!” With Dave’s spastic tom roll with Jon’s guitar noodles and Brad’s Bass tone you can chew on, before John spits out catchy lines of reminiscing winter with a tempo that’ll give you whiplash, I couldn’t get enough of some of the most talented individuals that are relatively close to my own scene at home!!

Neil Perry - Specimen (2002)

Neil Perry is a Screamo band based out of New Jersey from the remains of acts like “You and I”, “Red All Over”, and “Instil”. Starting in 1998, Their 99’ debut s/t record’s production will blast you out of your seat and flying out of the windshield with the sheer sonic boom of the instrumentals. Despite being one of the many short-lived hardcore acts with only so many songs to listen to (40+ to be specific so you definitely won’t get bored), they remain as one of the most influential powerhouses in the late 90’s Hardcore scene playing alongside acts such as Orchid, Jeromes Dream, Usurp Synapse, and even 1/4th of Neil Perry being in Joshua Fit For Battle, Josh LOL.

My earliest memory of Neil Perry was once again, the youtube algorithm suggesting me a CDr rip of Disc 2 from Neil Perry’s “Lineage Situation” 2xCD Comp, simply titled, “Neil Perry: The Movie”. The video opens with a montage playing to their song, “Kicked” in which i was hypnotized by the energy that these fellas were harnessing with the live show footage shown with the main chorus breakdown of Kicked. Honestly a part of me would like to be in a universe where Kicked was played over the trailer for Halo instead of Breaking Ben but no diss to those guys!

A quick skim through their discography and I was addicted to the one thing that unites all hardcore stank faces in one room together… drum fills… perfected by Neil Perry’s own, Justin Graves. Their Split LP with A Satellite Crash states BIBLICAL evidence of Graves being blast-beat Jesus and the fills only get nastier even up to their later, more tame, post-rock esq tracks on their last few songs. Prime example would be Graves’s fill at the end of “Fading Away Like the Rest of Them”, from their split with A Days Refrain.

Needless to say, there isn’t a lot I can glaze about Neil Perry that everyone hasn’t already said, other than that all of it is 100% reasonable and deserved because these guys Rawk. This record has some of my favorite tracks by them including,“Igor, My Girlfriend Dumped Me..”Perfect band to introduce to a friend who’s looking to get into the genre, HEAVILY RECOMMEND. by @yourvesseloftribulation

Guided By the Spirit of the Blue Bear - Portraits of Self Destruction (2025)
Green Cassette, Self-Released?

Guided By the Spirit of the Blue Bear is a Bedroom-Screamo band from two 1/3rds of the country, New York and Texas. Two things of note; They love cats, and they love making me cry with their beautiful emo lullabies.

My first experiences with a lo-fi, midi-esq drum beat on an emo record were “Brave Little Abacus’s” SEGA-Genesis that they converted into a de facto drummer, and the squeals of Tyler Odom’s fore-fronting bedroom skramz project, “Your Arms Are My Cocoon”, with their soft yet angsty aggressive delivery.

Blue Bear was a band that was properly introduced to me through friends. I had been reached out to about a house show they were playing in New York. I had work at the time that night in Pennsylvania so naturally, going to the show seemed out of the question, until by divine intervention, I got called off work. So at 4pm with nothing to do, I made the impulsive decision to drive 3 and a half hours to see them play and to hang out with friends. My tail had already been wagging by just being around my favorite people in one of my favorite scenes, but when Blue Bear came out with Acoustic guitars, a bass with a 1x8, a stylophone, and a snare/hi-hat/trashbin-kick in this maybe 4-Resident house with maybe 20-30 people. The intimacy that I felt listening to these bedroom projects on my own time, suddenly felt real for a moment. Racebannon - In The Grips of The Light (2002)
2xLP LP-34

“16 tracks recorded onto 2” quantegygrandmaster-platinum tape at Presto Recording Studio, Lincoln, Nebraska, by Mike & AJ Mogis from July 15th through July 21st of 2001.”

Racebannon is a hardcore band hailing from Bloomington, Indiana, frolicking in the same flower fields as Jerome’s Dream and Usurp Synapse; The three even embarked on a tour together, footage can be found of said tour on YouTube with the search “pick yr poison tour” with a YouTube video uploaded by usurp synapse. This is also where I discovered the band and immediately got hooked.

Forming in 1996 and releasing a demo tape in 1997, their earlier material is, in my opinion, more “on-the-nose” hardcore sounding with the 1-2 cymbal/snare and kick beats and half-step up-down progressions with even more pop-ish, punk sounding rhythms like the beginning of their song “I’m On The Racing Team” and a more groovy hardcore intro in “Red Hot Ranger”. A chronological listen of their discography up until their first LP quickly shows their growth in sound and dynamics, with more complex time changes and more aggressive, noise-punk, melvins-esq rhythms in later splits with other hardcore acts. Great recommendations/examples are “jeff seet” and “funny, she doesnt look french” on splits with Knives And Greenwater & To Dream of Autumn. Along with these elements, the Spastic vocals of Mike Anderson, the frontman, stuck out to me just as much as the bird squaks of Jeromes Dream’s Jeff Smith, with a more screaming with your gut/sasscore esq vocal delivery that reminds me of the attitudes of SOAD, and Nirvana at times.

This record in particular, released two years after their first LP, I would describe as “prog-noise-punk.” While keeping the same dissonant, angry, sassy sounding elements, they introduce more mathy rhythm changes and progressions that fade seamlessly into each other. Reading the lyrics, the album is an ego-death rollercoaster with borderline schizo ramblings, especially with the last track, “Im yr egomaniac”.

Jejune & Jimmy Eat World - Split 7” (1997)

Jejune and Jimmy Eat World were among some of the more prominent emo bands during the second wave, with Jimmy eat world reaching mainstream stardom later on and jejune sadly disbanding initially in 2000.

Jimmy Eat world I’d never hear the end of from my mother on car rides, playing most of the bigger hits off of bleed American and so on. I was honestly a little shocked but also not when I had mentioned this record as I don’t think she had listened to anything before BA. I showed her Jimmy’s first song on their side of this split, “What Would I Say To You Now?”, also featured as the last song on “Static Prevails”, and she liked the more lo-fi sounding era of Jimmy Eat World.

Jejune I had discovered with the blessings of YouTube’s algorithm, with a video simply titled “jejune” from 2009. The video featured a clip ripped from what I assume is a documentary called “the actuality of thought” of jejune performing the song “That’s why she hates me”, in which when I heard THE tempo change in that song I was instantly hooked on the band. This was maybe 2 years ago so sadly jejune hadn’t re-released their discography on streaming and the only song I could find was a compilation with one song from them on it.

Both bands are currently active now and as active as ever :). Solid record, heavily recommend. by @yourvesseloftribulation
