We got a little something from the Mayor’s office 🏆

Youth Represent received a Certificate of Recognition from the City of New York for 20 years of supporting young people in New York City through legal services, policy advocacy, education, and youth leadership development.

This recognition belongs to every young person who trusted us to stand in their corner. It belongs to all of you. The staff, supporters, funders and community members who made two decades of this work possible.

We’re beyond grateful for all your support 🧡 Here's to the next 20

“They are telling us loud and clear what they need: investments, resources, and real opportunities to grow and thrive. It’s our job to listen, and to act.” — Kate Rubin, Director of Policy, Youth Represent

On Thursday, October 22, we joined young people, families, advocates and elected officials at Marcus Garvey Park in Harlem to celebrate Youth Justice Action Month.

Speakers took to the open mic to share what youth justice and community safety mean to them. Among the speakers were six members of our Youth Committee, and Assembly Members Latrice Walker and Andrew Hevesi.

We are calling on Albany to pass three bills:

• #Right2RemainSilent: Children’s Early Access to Counsel. No child under 18 could be questioned by police until they’ve spoken with a lawyer. Sponsored by Sen. Jamaal Bailey and AM Andrew Hevesi.

• Youth Justice & Opportunities Act. Alternatives to incarceration and immediate record sealing for young people 25 and under. Sponsored by Sen. Zellnor Myrie and AM Latrice Walker.

• Youth Justice Innovation Fund. $50 million a year for community-based programs serving young people ages 12 to 25, paid for with money already set aside for Raise the Age. Sponsored by Sen. Cordell Cleare and AM Gabriella Romero.

Thank you to the partners who stood with us. Read the full press release at The Legal Aid Society's website. Link in BIO 🔗

Running taught Sylvie Gizzi that the best things take time. That goes for a marathon, and for the work of changing how this city treats young people. Sylvie is running the NYC Marathon for Youth Represent, because legal services should be available for everyone, especially young people who need it the most. Thanks for being in it for the long run 🙌

Congratulations to our most recent Elevated Minds cohort, led by Youth Development Coordinator Gregory Ellis!

For 12 weeks, participants unpacked four aggravating factors of violence and reflected on how each one shows up in their own lives and in the lives of people around them:

Devaluation
Dehumanization
Loss and rage
Erosion of community

This workshop helps young people build tools needed to move through conflict, grief and pressure and more. When they are able to name the factors and driving forces, they are able to pause and choose how they respond. Incredible work by Gregory Ellis and this cohort of Elevated Minds!

Special thanks to @etcnyorg for letting us use their space

Daphne Valencia, also known as Daph Punk, has already titled this training cycle: 26.2 Things I Hate About You. Daphne says this race is about something much bigger than one runner: lasting change for young people in NYC who've been shut out by the system.

Thanks for turning it up for us, Daph Punk 🎧

For five years, Alexis August has watched the NYC Marathon pass by from a block on 5th Avenue. This year Alexis is running it for Youth Represent, because “everybody deserves a chance to turn their life around.” Youth Represent provides young New Yorkers access to legal services so one mistake doesn’t define the rest of their lives.

Thanks for making us part of your first @nycmarathon 🙌

Last Saturday, members of the Youth Represent team and Youth Committee attended the @unitedjusticecoalition UJC Summit which brought together 1,300 leaders, advocates, experts, organizations, and community members committed to advancing justice. We heard from speakers, saw incredible art, and connected with people and organizations whose work connects to ours.

Thank you to United Justice Coalition for organizing, the brilliant speakers, and everyone who shared their time and experiences with us.

Natalie is running the NYC Marathon for Youth Represent, and we're proud to be along for it. Natalie runs so Youth Represent can provide free legal services, resources and leadership programs for young people in New York City, and advocate for laws that protect them.

Thank you for running with us, Natalie! 🫶
