Some cities you fall in love with instantly. For many visitors, Beijing is not one of them.

The world’s most populous capital with 22 million residents, the city is a sensory onslaught, immense in scale, intimidating upon first encounter in a way Shanghai just isn’t.

“At the very beginning, you’ll probably dislike the city,” says Chinese journalist and entrepreneur Jane Yang (@yqjane). “Because it’s chaos. There are a lot of people, and they aren’t elegant like in Shanghai. It’s more rock and roll, very authentic, traditional people of the ancient capital.”

In our latest edition of The Fix, Jane shares her insider guide to finding the Beijing that’s easy to love: from 600-year-old restored temples to courtyard-hidden plant-based dining and Inner Mongolian bistros.

From the misty, matsutake-rich mountains of Ma Pin Guan to the hidden Bai enclaves of ancient Silk Road towns, this is a journey through China’s most varied province — land of mushrooms, birthplace of tea.

Join journalist Jane Yang (@yqjane) and documentary storyteller Eduardo Leal (@eduardolealphoto) for a week traversing four ancient towns around Erhai Lake: picking mushrooms in the mountains, a whole-pig barbecue with a local family, tea reading with a Daoist seer, and an extraordinary final dinner at a secret restaurant for Chinese chefs.

🇨🇳There are two rooms left for our first journey to China, a trip unlike anything else out there that traverses the country’s most biodiverse and multiethnic province. Yunnan: land of mushrooms, birthplace of tea.

Led by the Chinese writer Jane Yang and former Bourdain fixer Alejo Sabugo, we begin in Shanghai and end in Dali, exploring four ancient towns that ring the storied Lake of Erhai—culminating in an extraordinary multi-course dinner in a secret restaurant for Chinese chefs.

A new language to tell the moments of a city. Thx so much to have @fabriziaconti_artist here for a shining morning, doing my first sketching by the street. What I appreciated a lot is how she told me to breaking logical boundaries to see what in front of your eyes, lights and shadows are just playing the game of lines. by @yqjane
