This is my most beloved self-portrait.

I am profoundly grateful to the one I love—my partner—whose steadfast presence and unwavering support gave me the strength to move forward, and the courage to transform. It was through him that I found the will to become the version of myself I had long yearned to be.

Lately, I’ve been thinking more and more about how fascinating free will really is. There are so many things in life that we simply don’t get to choose: where we are born, whom we meet, and even whether or not our bodies will become sick. None of these things are entirely within our control. And yet, somehow, beyond all the things we cannot choose, it seems that we still retain a small part of our freedom: I can decide whether I want to continue loving something, whether I want to return to a place I love, and whether, even when things become difficult, I still want to do the things that matter to me.

I think this is also why some people, after going through illness, pain, or years of treatment, are still able to stand up and move forward again. It’s not that they don’t know how much they are suffering. It’s that there is still something inside them that they want to do even more than they want to escape the pain.

That’s why I’ve come to appreciate this idea of free will more and more. Free will doesn’t mean that we can control our lives. It means that even when so many choices have already been taken away from us, we can still choose how we want to face what remains. Our bodies may sometimes be trapped by reality, but the human will can be incredibly powerful. Sometimes, it simply keeps pulling us forward.

Maybe that is one of the most fascinating things about being human. by @yuanyizhang
