Sea Forest 2023-2026
Dual-channel video, 4K, color, sound, 12 min
In collaboration with Nan-Jay Wang @jasir120 (camera) and Capitol K @_capitol_k (sound)

Research-based project spanning the Tamsui River estuary, Zhuoshui River estuary, Zengwen River estuary, and Cijin Island in Taiwan

Sea Forest focuses on mangrove ecosystems and changing coastal landscapes in the age of the climate crisis. Through fieldwork, archival research, and interdisciplinary collaboration, the artist draws on an 1864 mangrove specimen from Tamsui held at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew (formally described as a new mangrove species of Eastern Asia by C.R. Sheue, H.Y. Liu & J.W.H. Yong in 2003) and collections from the TAI Herbarium as key references. Using these as starting points, the project traces how botanical exploration under imperial systems and transregional plant-collecting networks have shaped the history of plant taxonomy and the recent disappearance of some mangrove species.

Mangroves, valued for their high carbon sequestration capacity, are regarded as an important nature-based solution to climate change. However, some wetlands have experienced ecological imbalance due to early artificial planting, highlighting tensions between conservation and management. In the face of rising sea levels and environmental upheaval, humans may need to learn from nature to understand the resilience of mangroves under shifting environmental conditions. Sea Forest traverses history, tracing a narrative of life entangled with extraction and development, extinction and loss, and restoration and regeneration. By situating Taiwan’s landscapes within a global context, the project reconsiders the complex relationship between humans and nature, defined by both interdependence and tension.

王郁媜《流動的海墘》Flowing Shoreline by Yu-Chen Wang
@taoyuan_landart_festival curated by @archiblur

Over two summer months, I created my first site-specific outdoor installation in response to the rich coastal ecosystem of Xucuogang Wetlands, where rivers meet the sea. Composed of tidal mudflats, sand dunes, mangroves, bulrushes, and windbreaks, the wetlands serve as a crucial habitat for protected migratory birds (Little Tern, Chinese Egret, and Black-faced Spoonbill), alongside a thriving intertidal network of native flora, amphibians, mudskippers, fiddler crabs, and eels.

Built without roofs or walls, this 24/7 open-air structure functioned simultaneously as an active field station for ecological observation, a site for viewing the shifting landscape, and a space of care for rest and social gathering. Over time, the piece continuously transformed through direct exposure to and collaboration with the weather, sun, wind, rain, and the raw force of several typhoons.

The project was deeply rooted in the old name of the area, ha̍i-qián (海墘)—a Taiwanese Hokkien term in which 墘 (kînn) signifies the edge: the living margin where land and water meet. This linguistic origin, rooted in the place’s character and terrain, became a point of departure for the work’s interrogation of the hyperlocal: How can hyperlocal histories and ecologies inform our wider global context, particularly amid climate change and uncertainty?

How can fieldwork, nature observation, and public participation come together to engage in an ongoing dialogue with local environments and more-than-human communities?

The installation invited the public to look outward from within the museum space, and to notice what is right in front of us yet so often overlooked. Together, we actively observe, listen, and experience the diverse ecology of the wetlands, discovering how climate, landscape, and multiple forms of life coexist and converge through a constantly shifting shore.

For the past week or so, I've been installing my first-ever outdoor installation as part of @taoyuan_landart_festival. Pic 2 is my daily route to the exhibition site: country lanes lined with rice paddies, leading to Xucuogang Wetlands, not far from the main airport.

It is because this area is where the rivers meet the sea that there is rich biodiversity, from mangrove forests, giant reeds, bayhops, and crabs to migratory birds, including plovers, little terns, and egrets. One morning, a butterfly even showed up as I arrived… and I’ve made quite a few local friends. Some of them come to chat with me everyday!

#FlowingShoreline #流動的海墘
This project continues my ongoing research into wetlandscapes, focusing on the counterpoint between the peatlands of England and the mangrove forests of Taiwan. Through archival research, fieldwork, and cross-disciplinary exchange, it explores the interplay between the ‘hyper-local’ and the ‘global’ within the context of climate change, shifting away from anthropocentric perspectives towards the interconnected coexistence of all living things.

Working on site in Taoyuan, the artist develops a mobile structure that functions simultaneously as a museum and an observation station. As it moves between Xucuogang Wetlands and the Xinwu River estuary, the installation engages with climatic and landscape conditions. The site-specific work extends to ephemeral elements such as wind, rain, and sunlight, adopting an environmental practice of ‘borrowing’ natural materials and ‘returning’ them to their original sites after the exhibition.

Through a series of public programmes, the space is transformed into a dynamic site of social gathering. As the work evolves through movement and relocation, it creates an experiential environment for audiences. Ultimately, the interactions between landscape, participants, and actions will inform a new film work for future international exhibitions, bringing local experience into a broader global context.

Thank you to everyone who visited my outdoor museum / field station at Xucuogang Wetlands. As this year's @taoyuan_landart_festival comes to an end. We have "returned" all the natural materials we borrowed to the exact location where they were found. The other items, such as marine debris and man-made stuff have been recycled or repurposed.

All that remains is the time we shared, rich memories, and endless stories of the land and sea. #FlowingShoreline #流動的海墘

My mobile museum / field station has been at Xucuogang Wetlands for the past two months! The outdoor installation has continued to evolve through the rainy season, two typhoons, and some sunny days. I’m grateful for the overwhelmingly positive responses from all the visitors, including local residents, birdwatchers, tourists, and migrant workers from the nearby industrial areas. Thanks to the curator Eric Chen @archiblur and @taoyuan_landart_festival for having me and for supporting me in every way possible.

The pictures were taken last week. Part of my installation was reconfigured and moved onto the intertidal zone during low tide. We had about four hours to deconstruct the structure, move the various parts, reassemble it there, and then move everything back onto the shore before the tide came in. The festival continues until 30 August.

This is my fifth time taking part in the Drawing Biennial! It all started with my participation in Drawing Room's library residency and the commissioned project Annotations in 2016–17. I'm grateful for Drawing Room's continued support ever since, and I'm donating this piece to express my appreciation.

This drawing is titled "Of Making World" (2026). Without sketches or preparatory work, this drawing unfolds intuitively and organically. Lines drift and gather, creating a quiet tension between motion and stillness, in a process of becoming. The composition suggests an evolving map where elements connect and disperse. Here, negative space plays an active role, allowing forms to breathe and shift; figurative shapes emerge and dissolve into abstraction, as if spanning multiple, overlapping dimensions.

Of Making World, 2026, pencil, coloured pencil, and ink on paper, 21 x 29.7 cm
