Oslo Day 3

I had a day to roam the city freely. First, I visited the studio of the incredible textile artist Elise Storsveen, courtesy of @koro.no. She has her new work hanging on the wall inside a new building by @nordicooa in the new government quarter, just outside prime minister’s office.

I then made my way to @uks1921 (Young Artists’ Society), it’s a very cool space managed by director @miriwizz, followed by a visit to Oslo’s City Hall. I was wowed by its murals…then I walked to @munchmuseum and I was wowed by Munch’s paintings…I realise how his scream painting really doesn’t do any favour to the breadth and depth of his work…

Oslo Day 2

The day started in @nordicooa’s beautiful office - originally built for use by Norway’s telegraph company in the neo-Baroque style completed in 1924 - with Nordic’s founder Gudmund Stokke taking us through their work on the new government quarter in Oslo, to a tour of the quarter, comprised of two brand new buildings, with new contemporary art installations commissioned by @koro.no (the original Picasso frieze has been retained and placed against the new facade), a 1950s brutalist building restored gently, updated to today’s needs, all of which have been interlinked to encourage intergovernmental communications.

The tour concluded with a visit to the new below-ground July 22nd Center. The exhibition within is deeply moving. The impact of the bomb on the site was huge, causing extensive damages to the nearby buildings. The new memorial piece in the public square has been unveiled in July this year. The project is all about showing resilience, Norway’s fight for democracy and effort to educate the vulnerable youth against extremism.

This is so important and relevant now with far-right racist political parties winning and gaining momentum in other parts of Europe with outside help. The Norwegian bomber and mass murderer was an extreme far right terrorist with deep hatred for the labour government in power 15 years ago.

I will be writing about this project soon!

Truth is perhaps best presented as unadorned…

That’s what the artist @terencegower seems to be saying with this new sound art installation “Enemies and Rascals” which was created for @artangel_ldn.

You have to go through long corridors and a lot of doors to reach the Original Cell, one of the fire-proof cells that used to store documents perfectly preserved after all these years, where Gower has chosen to install his sound art.

The Victorian building was once the UK’s headquarters of public record office, now UK’s largest university library, called Maughan Library, at @lifeatkings in Chancery Lane.

The artist left the room untouched but worked with actors to create a narrative from transcripts of speeches, declarations and accounts from the period around the battle of Quebec in 1775-1776, during the American war of independence.

You will hear quotes from historical figures, some more famous than others, like George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, the founding fathers of the United State of America - they seem to be hungry to grab land rich with resources.

With colleagues from the King’s College London’s Foyle Special Collections Library, Gower has also selected for display rare books and documents inside the Weston Room, not far from the Original Cell. The room was once a chapel, designed by the English architect Iñigo Jones in 1617 - you can still see the original features from that period - the mosaic floor, the stained-glass panels, and the tomb monument.

And don’t forget to check out the plaques representing countries like Canada, Africa, Europa, standing just outside the library…these plaques, created at the end of 19th century, relocated from a building nearby, show people conjured up in the mind of a 19th century plasterer, very funny, very strange indeed.

There is a lot to see and discover here.

Enemies and Rascals is open from Wednesday to Sunday until 16th October.

Don’t miss it. taken in Maughan Library by @yukisumner
