We’re honored to have presented at Together: Creating Community and Fostering Social Health through Storytelling—Asian Women Scholars (AWS) Symposium (2025)

Transnational Adoption, Identity, and Empowerment: Exploring Chinese Adoptees’ Experiences through Psychology, Studio Art, and Visual Communication

Transnational adoption from China, has been a historical phenomenon in the past decades. Contemporary forms of globalization and international travels have been blurring the boundaries of homes and sociocultural institutions. How do adoptive children and their parents and siblings navigate their personal journeys in the ever-changing world of cultural clashes? Based on perspectives across psychology, studio art, and visual communication, we started this project to explore Chinese adoptees and their families’ experiences in the United States and aim to create and present scholarly and creative works about their empowering stories.

This interdisciplinary project explores Chinese adoptees’ experiences in the U.S. through psychology, studio art, and visual communication. It includes research on adoptee development and family dynamics, an artist book on motherhood and kinship, and graphic illustrations contrasting cultural upbringing. Together, these works aim to raise awareness and amplify underrepresented voices through collaborative storytelling.

Respons(e)ibility — Artist’s Book

This piece began as a response to the transnational adoption of thousands of ethnically Chinese girls during China’s One-Child Policy. Shaped by state control, racial preference, and global inequality, these adoptions raise critical questions about who is allowed to parent, and who is not.

Drawing on Judith Butler’s reflections on kinship, I explore motherhood as an ongoing process—a becoming—grounded in care, recognition, and responsibility rather than biology or legality. The work resists the cold language of adoption paperwork through soft, handmade paper that frays, folds, and embeds the journey of becoming. Its wheeled glass shelter speaks to the movement involved in forming a family across borders.

Respons(e)ibility invites reflection on alternative forms of kinship beyond bloodlines.

House of Yuan——Artist’s Book

This is a project that explores memory, identity, and cultural preservation in the context of immigration. Through the use of objects and photographs, the artist captures connections to her homeland, weaving them into collages that document her family's migration story. She draws particular inspiration from familial culinary traditions—passed down without written recipes—and reinterprets them through visual collage, creating a kind of visual journal. The inclusion of English cookbooks serves as a metaphor for her bilingual upbringing and her parents’ limited English proficiency. This process affirms both the family's place within the local Chinese community and their continued connection to their cultural roots.

I've had this on my mind for a while, finally getting to it. Just so grateful for the space to work, I was fully prepared not to be able to work on anything sculptural after graduation 🥲
