The only thing on the schedule was the sunrise.

Koh Yao Noi is reached by boat. The hilltop pool faces east; the light comes over the limestone islands before anything else does. Ocean Panorama Pool Villa. Lunch at The Living Room, the spa after.

We swam twice a day. Nothing else was planned.

Ten million years old, and ninety minutes from Changi.

The Datai sits where one of the world’s oldest rainforests runs into the Andaman Sea. Mist on the ridge before seven. Langurs in the figs. Hornbills crossing the canopy. Pink dolphins in the mangroves, forty-five minutes up the coast.

One day, from the mist to the last of the light.

The boat leaves at five.

A longtail out into Phang Nga Bay, past the limestone, to a bar of sand with nothing built on it. A table set for two, wine poured, the crew somewhere behind us and so quiet we forgot they were there.

The sun went down behind the islands. For three hours it was ours.

90 minutes from Singapore, The Datai sits in a 10 million year old rainforest above Datai Bay.

The pool feels like a natural clearing. A shaded path drops through primary forest to the beach - one of the ten National Geographic rates best in the world.

Hornbills at breakfast, langurs in the fig trees at first light, resident naturalists to tell you what you’re looking at.

Forty-five minutes by road, then a boat into the mangroves, and the pink dolphins there are worth leaving for.

Dinners are coastal and considered. The hour before them is the best of the day.
