(Sound works now)
This is a short film I made back in 2017 about my son and @liftwithpurpose and it wouldn’t have happened without @kjayadams and @familyvoicestn. Posting this to raise money for our organization. Please donate and share link in bio!

I have a deep appreciation for the amazing women I work with. I've learned so much about from watching them. My co-workers inspire me to do the work we do. @familyvoicestn were the first people to give me a real chance to grow, and have been so patient as I've learned how to fulfill my role. Before I started working for FVTN in 2018, I emailed Kara September of 2016 about partnering on an art project to engage families, and I really don't know how different my life would've been had she not been there to find value in the work I was doing. The @metroartsnash funding I was applying for required I had a community partner, and if Family Voices hadn't seen value in the work I was trying to do I wouldn't have been able to complete my first short film or create a space for families like mine to feel valued that often feel isolated. As a former NICU dad and father of child with a disability, I felt that isolation. You know if you know. I'm glad to be a part of an organization that knows. FVTN knows what families are going through out here and meets them where they are to make families feel heard, help families navigate this maze, and building families up to be leaders in the community. I'm proud to work here.

About @familyvoicestn

We connect families with each other, community resources, experienced parent mentors, tools to navigate complex systems in healthcare and insurance and more.

By training families, we are empowering them to advocate for the needs of their child and to lead in their local communities and beyond.

In serving as leaders alongside families, we are educating healthcare providers, policy makers, teachers and others on the improved outcomes from including, listening to and honoring the voices of these families.

Our unique network of staff and volunteers have personal experience navigating the healthcare journey of an individual with a special healthcare need, chronic illness or disability. by @yung__tv

I realized I need to study more about previous movements to figure out what my role can be in a new one. The past month has stripped any fear I had away about doing what I think is right even when I know it’s ā€œwrongā€. I really identified with this phrase and it’s something I never had the words for before. Now I want to work backwards to be more intentional about how I ā€œcause troubleā€, and the first step is to learn about those who ā€œcaused troubleā€ before me. I want change, and I’m going to get that shit.

I appreciate tf out of the whole @peoplesplazatn gang. Witnessing hundreds of people just showing up and working together to call for change has been one of the most amazing experiences I’ve had. If they tear it down, we gone put it right back. We have nothing to fear. #goodtrouble #necessarytrouble

ā€œIt almost seems the more the unjust resisted, the more impassioned the call for change. After the initial protest, the each protest became an exercise in freedom instead of a cause for alarm. Think about your greatest fear. Consider how you would feel if your life required you to face with what you fear most every day. Ultimately if you survive this test, you discover what you feared actually had no power over you. No power to harm you at all. The freedom you will feel so beautiful, so uplifting, so invigorating.ā€ #johnlewis šŸ“ššŸ“– Across the Bridge (2019)

The past two weeks have been a humbling experience. I didn’t know what to expect when I got to the @peoplesplazatn protest. I certainly didn’t actually believe people weren’t going to stay there as long as they have. It’s been one of the most cathartic things I’ve done all year. I’ve had time to reflect on all the things going on in the world, and also find more things wrong with our community. One of most shocking and upsetting things I’ve experienced is realizing how many homeless folks struggle managing their mental and physical health. Also, seeing people with intellectual disabilities on the street is the most disheartening shit ever, and I look across the street and see state troopers deployed at the request of @govbilllee. Thinking to myself how much does that actually cost? How many hours of overtime is the bust of a domestic terrorist and traitor worth? It’s worth trying to create more stiffer penalties to quell peaceful protesters than just getting rid of a symbol of hate? Seeing the lengths they’re willing to go to keep protect a symbol of hate while Tennesseans languish on the streets is sickening to watch. When this is over, I hope we all keep that same energy to protect the most vulnerable among us. The same energy they spent protecting Nathan Bedford Forrest’s bust, and the energy we’ve spent trying to remove it needs to go towards homelessness. But for now you Bill Lee and General Assembly will get this work. And while we’re there we’ll feed the people y’all just tried to criminalize further instead of removing a symbol of hate. What’s wild is I went to a police brutality/ confederate monument protest and the most shocking thing I’ve seen is how we’ve failed so many fucking people. I watched a trooper body slam a skinny ass woman and punch someone in the face too, and what’s sad about that is I expected that type of shit. - rant over - please consider standing with us on Sunday there’s a ā€œBack the Badgeā€ rally scheduled on the plaza. It’s wild to see a motherfucker that sells ā€œI support policeā€ shirts with terrible typography gas folks into thinking that we’re there to solely antagonize police. All this smoke is for Bill. šŸ“ø @not_alex_kent_ taken in Ida B. Wells Plaza by @yung__tv
