7.12.26 - JAŸ-Z “Extra Innings” at Yankee StadiumMan… did that really just happen? Was that… REAL? The show was on Sunday (really Monday morning), it’s now Friday, and I’m still trying to process that I was somehow in attendance. It was also (I know this sounds unbelievable but it’s true) the first concert I’ve ever attended by myself. So everything about what unfolded was absolutely bizarre. I wrote the following more so to help myself process it all than anything else, so don’t mind me. The murder and subsequent resurrection of a person’s soul is a tough thing to digest. It’s a slow process. And I ain’t got nothin but time. So here we go…First, the adrenaline rush of stepping off the train in the South Bronx, the birthplace of hip-hop, into what can only be described as Planet Hov. The sky apparently raining Yankee fitteds and timbs. The mental and physical fatigue from the incredible wedding I had attended the previous 2 days instantly leaving my mind and body, replaced with sheer jubilation. The mood captured perfectly by a dude in a Jeter jersey telling a street vendor that he’s “smoking big dick” if he thinks he’s paying $120 for 4 shots of Henny, while 30 of us die laughing.Since the lines are already insane, I do something I NEVER do: line up early and get inside before 7. Little do I know it’s going to be the single best decision I’ll ever make at any concert I’ve ever attended. I settle into my seat and start choppin it up with my neighbors, a couple from Richmond who drove up 5 hours to be here. They tell me they claim Jay as if he’s their own. I tell ‘em I would too. Hope y’all dribbled back down to VA smooth.Then… the delay. As the sun sets and D-Nice finishes his DJ set, the crowd starts to fill in, but something is off. There aren’t nearly as many people in their seats as one would think considering the magnitude of the situation. Do y’all know Jigga Man is about to go on? Surely it can’t be this many of you still getting drinks and merch. Where is the urgency?1 hour, 2 hours, 3 hours, 4…As 10pm approaches, I check Twitter and see the first inclination that something is indeed fucked up. Some lames rushed a gate, so security closed ALL by @yunusallen
