Samplerman's entire goal is to confuse you. Yvan Guillo builds his work from decades-old American comics, mostly from the 1940s, pulled from scans of books he could never have afforded to own himself. He can look at an unsigned panel and tell you the decade, sometimes the actual cartoonist, just from the linework. He knows exactly what he's using. None of that is the point. "In the end my aim would be to confuse everyone about my technique," he told us. "Is it a real or digital collage, an original drawing, a redrawing, a copy of a copy? Who cares?" He spent years trying to work as an illustrator but that didn't get right. When he started making collage instead, something shifted. Collage let him keep making images without using his own hand. He calls what he makes "a dream of a story rather than a story," more a laboratory experiment with borrowed figures than something he's writing from scratch. From the TWS archive. French phenomenon Yvan Guilllo will be talking about his kaleidoscopic Samplerman comics, for which he reworks old American comics. Out of these he makes sometimes bizarre and almost hallucinogenic collages, that invite endless discovery. Lately, he has also developed an interest in ancient Japanese woodcut prints. In the opening talk of Cross Comix Festival 2026 he will explain how he works and what he wants to convey. ➤ Follow Guillo @yvang______ ➤ Cross Comix 2026 📅 11-12 September 📍De Doelen, Rotterdam @dedoelenrotterdam 🔗 https://crosscomix.eu #crosscomix #collage #rotterdam #samplerman by @yvang______
