In 1986, Inspector Rolf Siebold stands at a crime scene. This murder case will never leave him: to this day, he believes he knows who the murderer is. And that his investigations were obstructed by the justice system. The victim was discovered in the bushes at a highway exit, severely battered and clearly murdered. He was Renate’s brother. Vielleicht liegt es daran, dass ich DEN Martin Suter fotografiert habe, dass ich eine kleine Geschichte dazu teilen möchte.

Ein regnerischer Winterabend vor der Kronenhalle. Ich hatte gerade Kamera, Stativ und Lichtsachen vom Velo geladen und versuchte, etwas unbeholfen, mit all dem Zeug durch die Eingangstür zu kommen. Ein älterer, leicht angetrunkener Gast stand rauchend davor. Er half mir nicht mit der Tür, musterte mich dafür von oben bis unten und fragte, ob ich denn hier richtig sei. Ich trete wohl zur Abendschicht in der Küche an, meinte er. Es lag diese selbstverständliche Gewissheit in seiner Frage, dass er hierhergehörte und ich vermutlich nicht. Zürcher Hochmut in seiner reinsten Form, eine sanfte Kopfnuss sozusagen zum Einstieg bei meinem ersten Mal in der Kronenhalle.

Drinnen wurde es dann umso schöner. Wir begrüssten uns, ich wartete einen Augenblick, bis das Interview zu Ende war, und dann legten wir los. Ich hob die Kamera, machte die ersten Bilder von Martin und bemerkte plötzlich, dass er dasselbe tat. Kamera vor dem Gesicht, auf mich gerichtet. Offenbar hatte ich nicht ganz allein entschieden, wer an diesem Abend wen portraitiert.

Im ersten Moment war ich irritiert, im zweiten geschmeichelt. Danach haben wir unsere Bilder ausgetauscht. Eine kleine, schöne Geste und eine Begegnung, die mir in Erinnerung bleiben wird.

Sometimes it’s the simple things that keep pushing me forward as a photographer.

Alongside commissioned work, editorials and tests, this year I also tried to pass on some of what I’ve learned. And realised how interesting it is to explain the way I work, rather than just constantly doing it.

The workshop was actually all about working with sunlight. We had none that afternoon. Which somehow made it even more useful. Because photography is often exactly that: finding quick workarounds, reacting to what’s there and making something work within a very short amount of time.

We photographed everyone live and talked about how I work: fast, uncomplicated, with empathy and, above all, intuition.

Thanks for the interest, the questions and the exchange. Would happily do it again. by @yvesbachmann

3 days in Shanghai. It was a fascinating place to explore.
A quiet hum of electric cars and scooters fills the streets, almost calming.
The camera stayed in my bag most of the time. Experiencing the city felt more important than photographing it. In the end, only a few moments made it onto film. I didn't even finish a single roll.
A place I'd happily return to. Thx to Andrea & Natalie for getting me there, Helen for showing us around, and Anthony for lending me your bike 🙏🏽 by @yvesbachmann
