Since I was in the area anyway, I decided to take a look at what we’ll be christening the ‘Sepp Kuss corner.’ It was there—after attacking on the Col de Sarenne—that Sepp threw away an almost certain stage win on Alpe d’Huez: first, he slid out in a tricky sharp bend beneath a bridge further up the road, and a kilometer later, he actually nearly plunged into a ravine. I find it hard to understand how you could miss that turn, but had that safety netting not been there—as it was today—he would have ended up a hundred meters further down. A stroke of luck amidst the misfortune, yet a real shame for Sepp, as that would undoubtedly have been the finest victory of his career. Harried by Carapaz and rattled by that earlier crash, he likely couldn’t keep his cool.

Not just any city gets a replica of that quintessential Belgian icon, Manneken Pis—but Colmar, in the Haut-Rhin, did. In 1922, a copy of our little peeing friend was officially unveiled as a shared symbol of liberation from the Germans—though the French did mistakenly play the Dutch national anthem instead of *La Brabançonne*. Where have we heard something like that before, Mr. Leterme? Anyway, it was just a flying visit to pick up my American friend Mark and his wife for a motorcycle trip. It’s a lovely town, but far too crowded for my taste—completely overrun by Asian tourists posing, filming, and taking photos—so I beat a hasty retreat. I might give it another shot in October, though, because after that, the dreadful Christmas markets take over. Give me the peace of the mountains and their charming villages any day.
