I have too many hobbies, but my most relaxing is gardening. Flowers and vegetables. It’s a convenient excuse to spend some time in the tranquillity outside, without a driving goal or destination. There’s always something to putter away at amongst the plants. A new variety to grow or method to try. A peaceful distraction.

And the rewards abound from spring blooms to summer and fall harvest!

Summiting Sky Pilot - July 12, 2026:
.
@lee.purvis , his son @nathaniel.hp and I had a fantastic climb up Sky Pilot earlier in July. Starting from the top of the Sea-to-Sky Gondola @seatoskygondola in Squamish and involving a lot of hiking, some glacier travel and a good measure of rock scrambling/climbing up to low 5th class. It’s a wonderful position to be in, high up in the alpine - what an atmosphere!! I can’t believe I’ve been climbing around Squamish for 34 years and never did this one. Well worth the pain I felt in the days following.

15.5 km hike/climb with 1,200 meter elevation gain - 9 hours round trip.

Last pic is Sky Pilot on the left, viewed from the top of the gondola, after our descent.

After an incredibly rainy drive up to Osoyoos yesterday, we woke to perfect temps and sunshine for the Half Corked Marathon. @lee.purvis , Joanne, @genegeek and I “ran” the course through vineyards and the Okanagan countryside, tasting many delicious wines along the way. That’s my kind of half marathon.

On Sunday morning, Manuel and I headed down to Galaxy Buttress to climb Indra’s Net (5.9, 5 pitches, bolted). The setting is everything. Fun moves above the beautiful and talkative Cheakamus River. Feels very alpine despite being so easily accessible. Recommended.
.
At the base by 7:30, topped out before 9:00. Back to the car before the next parties were even hiking in. My suggested approach for beating the climbing crowds in the Sea-to-Sky region.

Friday-Sunday (May 1-3) was the annual Hagery Spring Thaw event in British Columbia, Canada. A chance for 75+ vintage & classic car owners to shake out the cobwebs and get out on the road. An eclectic mix from the high end (Rolls Royce & Ferrari) to the cheap, cheerful and quirky (a periwinkle Citroën 2CV 💜). Mine is the red 1967 Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GT Veloce (GTV stepnose).
.
We drove over 2,000 kms through Duffey Lake, all through the Okanagan, passed some frozen lakes in the alpine and out as far as Nelson, BC. Mostly curvy side roads to keep it fun. Lots of enthusiastic driving. Some of these old beaters can really move.
.
And a free ferry ride (there are many interesting free ferries across interior lake - recommended ones inlude the Needles cable ferry and Shelter Cove). And perfect weather for a change. 🌞
.
My fifth year and I’m sure to return. Great times, good friends, fun roads.
.
I barely made it home late last night with a failing fuel pump - but made it just at dusk! PHEW!

Day 1 of the Spring Thaw.
Seventy five vintage & classic cars zooming around the curvy backroads of beautiful British Columbia. The best way to break in the Alfa to a new season. Enthusiastic driving, mountain roads, lake ferry rides, a frozen lake (!) and good people. Joy!
