We are ONE WEEK AWAY from our 11th Annual BraVa!

BraVa! is a fundraiser to "uplift" YWCA of the Greater Capital Region that will provide new bras and binders to those in need.

**PLEASE NOTE - all guests are additionally asked to come with a new, with tags, bra or binder to donate; larger band sizes are preferred (40+.)**

Partnering with the Arts Center of the Capital Region, this event features talented local writers who will read jury-selected poems and essays or perform songs and monologues on the subject of the brassieres in their lives. The pieces will touch on the subject of bras from many viewpoints and range from the poignant to the hilarious.

YWCA-GCR staff will provide a delicious menu of small bites to enjoy before the performance.

Our 2026 Resourceful Women’s Gala was an incredible evening filled with empowerment and community 🧡

We want to thank everyone for your support, encouragement, and partnership in the work we at YWCA-GCR do each and every day. Because of the generosity of our donors, sponsors, and guests, we were able to raise over $105,000! These funds go towards supporting the women and children who we support and serve: giving them a second chance, safe housing, resources, job opportunities, and food security.

Congratulations to our Resourceful Woman of the Year, Kathy Sheehan, our Woman of Inspiration, Mary Fiero, and our Mission Partner, CARES of NY!

Next week is YWCA's Annual Week Without Violence: this year's Week Without Violence, we're Rising Together: Centering Young Voices to End Gender-Based Violence.

Young people are disproportionately impacted by intimate partner violence, sexual assault, grooming, and exploitation, yet their voices are too often left out of conversations about prevention, healing, and change.

Join YWCA USA October 19-23 as we come together to listen, learn, advocate, and imagine a future free from violence.

On Wednesdays throughout the month of October, our staff wears purple! Domestic Violence Awareness Month is an incredibly difficult one but also such an important reminder to honor those who have been affected and to stand by our community. We at YWCA-GCR will always stand by survivors and you will always have a place here. Thank you to everyone who continues to stand up and speak out against violence in our community, together we can make a difference! 💜

One week away!! I'll be attending both nights and advocates @misssimonphoenix_ @jonseekingpeace and @explaintheasterisk will be attending at least one night as well

I have a little something something in the works that I'm very excited about and will be sharing more at the sign making/group support night!!

This isn't about feeling sorry for ourselves (although we deserve to grieve and mourn,) this is about turning our pain and fury into action, change, and policy reform! This is about connection with others who understand our pain as we laugh, cry, and scream together.

You do not have to be a survivor to attend. This is open to anyone who is frustrated with the system we live in and disturbed by r*pe culture today. You are allowed to feel grief and anger on our behalf.

More than anything I'm just excited to work with @ywcagcr who does a lot of phenomenal advocacy, support, and recognition. by @ywcagcr

It’s Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Congress must urge the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Department of Justice (DOJ) to expedite the release of all congressionally approved Family Violence Prevention and Services Act (FVPSA) and Office on Violence Against Women (OVW) funding.

These delays are putting survivor services at risk—forcing programs to consider staff cuts, reduced services, and even closures. Survivors can’t wait.

Repost this message and reach out to your members of Congress today by calling the U.S. Capitol Switchboard: (202) 224-3121.

Indigenous Peoples’ Day is a moment to honor Native peoples’ enduring cultures, contributions, and leadership - and to tell the truth about the legacy of colonization.

YWCA-GCR's building and surrounding area is the former home to the Mohican People, whose rich history and beautiful traditions deserve to be honored and celebrated.

A few facts about the Mohicans:

The Mohican society operated on a matrilineal kinship system, with property, inheritance, and hereditary offices passed down through the maternal line.

Spirituality held profound significance in the tribe’s way of life, mirroring the central role it played in various other cultures.

Their belief system shared similarities with the Pequot and Wampanoag tribes, placing immense value on the connection with the earth and the Great Spirit, also known as the Creator.

According to their tradition, this divine spirit, called Waunthut Mennitoow or Wauntht Mennitow (among other spellings), transcended human-like attributes and remained beyond personification, devoid of gender or human forms.

In the realm of music, the drum and flute held a prominent place, with compositions tailored for religious ceremonies, joyous celebrations, and daily life gatherings.

The resonant melodies echoed through their communities, fostering a sense of togetherness and celebration of their culture.

We hope you join us in celebrating the history of the Mohican people and the beauty of their lives and legacy.
