A colourful new mural has appeared beneath Victoria’s Johnson Street Bridge, giving pedestrians a new piece of public art to admire as they wander beneath the downtown bridge. 🎨

Titled The Salish Sea Remembers, the Indigenous mural celebrates the region’s rich cultural history and the connection between the lək̓ʷəŋən peoples and the surrounding waterways.

The artwork was designed by Indigenous artist Melissa Barnhard, also known as Nawhea’mowha, and was painted by Barnhard alongside Jesse Campbell.

The Greater Victoria Harbour Authority (GVHA) recently shared photos of the completed mural, highlighting its colourful depiction of marine life and Indigenous storytelling.

A massive ocean wave is making its way toward Greater Victoria, but it’s not the kind of wave you might be imagining. 🌊

Known as a Kelvin wave, the phenomenon is expected to reach BC’s coastline around mid-October and could temporarily raise ocean levels around Greater Victoria.

Unlike a tsunami, it won’t come crashing onto shore. Instead, it causes a gradual rise in sea levels as it moves along the coastline.

Scientists say a similar wave earlier this year raised ocean levels by more than 30 centimetres in some parts of BC.

The biggest concern is if the higher water levels combine with strong winds, storms or unusually high tides, potentially increasing the risk of localized coastal flooding.

While significant impacts aren’t currently expected, residents living near the water are encouraged to keep an eye on weather conditions and tide forecasts.

For most people, the wave isn’t expected to affect daily life, but those living along low-lying coastal areas should keep an eye on changing conditions. by @yyjbuzz

A long-running Victoria seniors’ residence says it could be forced to close within the next year unless it can secure roughly $200,000 in additional funding and donations.

The Glenshiel Housing Society, located at 606 Douglas Street near Beacon Hill Park, currently provides housing for 64 seniors, many of whom live on limited incomes.

In an email, executive director Melanie MacLeod told Victoria Buzz the financial pressure facing the non-profit is immediate.

“We risk closing within a year if we cannot find an uplift in donations or funding at this time,” MacLeod said.

The organization is hoping to raise approximately $200,000 to get its accounts into good standing and help maintain operations.

Without additional support, MacLeod estimates The Glenshiel could continue operating for approximately eight months to one year.

The society has already reduced some services and laid off staff as it tries to control costs.

Victoria’s most popular sandwich pop-up finally has a permanent home in Quadra Village. 🥪

Last Friday, October 2nd, Hero Sandwich Bar quietly opened its doors to the public after months of preparing its new brick-and-mortar location at 1002 Hillside Avenue, the former home of Gigi’s Cafe.

Julie Gauthier, owner and operator of Hero, says the support she received during her opening weekend was nerve-racking but also exciting, as she sold out on both Saturday and Sunday.

For many, finding a cat while out on a walk can be the highlight of the excursion. 🐈

A Victoria-based couple is aiming to harness that positive energy and whimsy through a homemade app, turning it into a community building exercise.

The app is called Chonk Finder, and allows users to document cats they find, taking their picture and turning them into cards on the app.

Cats, or “chonks,” as the app calls them, will then show up for other users, who can find them and add them to their collection.

What’s better than supporting local businesses in Victoria? Getting rewarded while you do it! ☕️

Residents can support local cafes, reduce waste and win prizes all at the same time this October as the City of Victoria’s reuse stamp card contest returns for its third year.

The campaign runs throughout October and encourages residents to bring a reusable cup when purchasing beverages at participating cafes throughout Victoria.

More than 35 local businesses are taking part, with prizes up for grabs including a custom bike from Recyclistas, spa passes from Destination Greater Victoria, gift cards from the Downtown Victoria Business Association, and various zero-waste prize packs.

To take part, residents can pick up the wallet-sized stamp card from a participating businessor from City Hall.

Each time you use a reusable cup at one of the contest locations during October, you’ll get a stamp, counting as one entry into the prize draw.

The more stamps you collect will increase the chances of winning, so make sure to keep those London Fogs coming!
