How can we make sure medical equipment is available where it’s needed most during a crisis? And what role can geoinformatics and data-driven solutions play in making that happen? 🌍🏥 At the #MEDLOK Proof of Concept event, held at the KAGes seminar center at LKH Graz II / Süd, the project team presented its key research results and demonstrated the MEDLOK system using realistic crisis scenarios. Participants got an overview of the project’s main results – from data collection and modelling to practical applications for crisis response and resource management. 🔍 The focus: • How can we track and locate medical equipment more effectively during emergencies? • How can data and innovative technologies support better planning and resource allocation? • What legal requirements need to be considered? • What are the next steps towards putting MEDLOK into practice? For geoinformatics, this is a great example of how spatial data, modelling and digital tools can support real-world decision-making when it matters most. 🗺️📊 The event also brought together experts from research, healthcare, public authorities and industry to discuss user acceptance, future applications and further development opportunities. Because preparing for future crises takes collaboration across disciplines and sectors. 🤝 A big thank you to everyone who took part and shared their valuable insights! 👥 The MEDLOK project consortium: 👉 Graz University of Technology – Institute of Health Care Engineering (project lead) 👉 Disaster Competence Network Austria 👉 Predicting Health 👉 Z_GIS – Department of Geoinformatics, University of Salzburg 👉 KAGes – Styrian Hospital Corporation 👉 Land Steiermark – Department A8: Health and Care 👉 Austrian Federal Ministry of Defence 💡MEDLOK is funded through #KIRAS, Austria’s security research funding programme, supported by the Federal Ministry of Finance. 💙🩵 A heartfelt thank you to our exceptional hosts at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University for offering such an outstanding experience for everyone at the Eurasia-Pacific Uninet Plenary Meeting & #Erasmus+ Cooperation Seminar in Almaty! 🇰🇿 We all, including the delegation from OeAD – Österreichs Agentur für Bildung und Internationalisierung, are especially grateful to Rector Zhanseit Tuimebayev and First Vice-Rector Samgat Yermekbayev for their warm welcome, leadership and strong commitment to international cooperation. Your support, together with the dedication and professionalism of the entire #KazNU team led by Aizhan Mussagaliyeva, created an inspiring environment for meaningful discussions, new partnerships, and the exchange of ideas. The hospitality, attention to detail and collegial atmosphere made this event both highly productive and truly memorable. We deeply appreciate the opportunity to strengthen our academic collaboration and friendship. 🌍✨ Рахмет! Thank you, #KazNU, for making our very first plenary meeting in Central Asia such a special and successful gathering! 🙏🏻🎉 Text by Josef Strobl ✍🏼 #GIScommunity by @z_gis
In 2026, long-term glacier monitoring continued in the Upper Stubach Valley. The Stubacher Sonnblickkees (SSK), Ödenwinkelkees (ÖWK) and Unteres Riffelkees (URK) remain at the heart of our observations. 🔎🏔️🛘 The 2025/26 hydrological year brought particularly unfavorable conditions for glaciers in the high mountains. Winter was unusually mild and dry, with very little snowfall. At Rudolfshütte, only around 40% of the average new snowfall was recorded. ❄️ Summer 2026 also brought prolonged periods of heat and dry weather. 🌞🥵 These conditions make continuous monitoring more important than ever. Long-term measurements help us track glacier changes and understand their development in the context of weather, climate and the water cycle. 💦 For decades, the LTER Site Oberes Stubachtal has provided a unique foundation for this research – combining traditional field measurements with modern remote sensing and geoinformatics. 🧭 Translated from the German text by @berniez_gis #GlacierMonitoring #ClimateChange #Stubachtal #HoheTauern by @z_gis
