I vividly remember taking these images, almost 4 years ago. I knew exactly what I was doing, and why I was doing it- and it was one of the hardest shoots I’ve ever done. I knew these images would live on forever, much longer than Nonnos physical body and soul. I remember not being able to open the images for months, possibly years - as it would break me to pieces knowing this day would come.

The garage was a special place to me and Nonno’s relationship, from young child through to a fully grown adult. I remember endless Italian music via cassette tapes, horse racing, tools and odd bits and pieces scattered around - but mostly just Nonno being Nonno, pottering always pottering around at something in there (Now I think I know where I get it from). From fixing bikes he collected, planting veggies in the garden, and having a Heineken Zero together - the shed was a place where it was mine and Nonnos time.
 I wanted to shoot these images to keep forever, and capture Nonno In his environment whilst I still could - knowing that their time living in their own home was almost up due to the necessity of moving into a care facility. I visited the house after they had moved, and shot the empty space through crying eyes and a broken heart - but I’m glad I did.

My Nonno is my hero, a man that came to this country with nothing and built everything we all have today from ground zero. He taught me that to be rich is to sit at the dinner table and be surrounded by family, enjoying laughs and stories. I loved taking photos of Nonno, here are a few of my favourites.

How lucky for our son Finley to meet Big Nonno and hang out throughout the year. 4 generations of Dorio’s in one room is something incredibly special and I will never forget these days. He will forever be spoken about, and his legacy will live forever - as will these images.

Resting peacefully now, but never forgotten. 🤍
