Very powerful and much needed intervention from former Prime Minister @borisjohnsonuk calling on Pakistan to free @imrankhan.pti

“What the Pakistani generals fear is that if they let him out, his millions of fans in Pakistan will simply bear him aloft to a tumultuous victory in the next available election. That is why they are treating him with such cruelty – refusing even to allow his two sons, Sulaiman and Kasim, to have visas to visit him in jail.” by @zacgoldsmithofficial

"What's even more alarming is that a lot of people from within the sector have come out and said actually ... what he's saying has a lot of merit."

Lord Goldsmith gives ControlAI's Grace Gonzales his reaction to the news that an Anthropic researcher has resigned, stating that Anthropic and OpenAI are "gambling with our lives" by racing to build self-improving superintelligence.

On the question of what governments can do if they need to intervene on the risks, Lord Goldsmith says about ControlAI's bill to prohibit superintelligent AI:

"That's why this bill that has been introduced in the UK Parliament is so important." by @zacgoldsmithofficial

Good move by @ed_miliband & FCDO. Of all the international causes to support, helping protect the world’s great forest basins must be amongst the highest. We cannot survive without them, but are still doing our level best to replace them. This is a big boost to the only really serious proposal on the table to make forests worth more alive than dead 🙏🌏🙏 by @zacgoldsmithofficial

I appealed to the Secretary General of the Commonwealth to make representations to the government of Pakistan on behalf of @imrankhan.pti
I said “The Commonwealth Charter commits its members to democracy, human rights, the rule of law, good
governance and the separation of powers. Those principles have meaning only if the Commonwealth is prepared to defend them when they come under serious pressure within a member state.”
Here is the response I received (my original letter follows).
As a former Minister for the Commonwealth, I recognise this for what it is- code for saying “we are doing absolutely nothing”.
It is, frankly, a disgrace. by @zacgoldsmithofficial

RIP the wonderful Wendell Berry

“Once plants and animals were raised together on the same farm — which therefore neither produced unmanageable surpluses of manure, to be wasted and to pollute the water supply, nor depended on such quantities of commercial fertilizer.
The genius of American farm experts is very well demonstrated here: they can take a solution and divide it neatly into two problems.”

I had the honour of looking after him briefly when he came to London twenty or so years ago. He was an extraordinary writer and thinker, and a gentleman by @zacgoldsmithofficial

At this time of year along the Antarctic Peninsula, penguin colonies pack the shoreline, whales arrive back after thousand mile journeys, and seals haul out to breed – all feeding on the same rich swarms of krill that underpin the entire ecosystem.
But the system used by nations to regulate their use of and behaviour in Antarctica - the Antarctic Treaty which set aside territorial disputes in favour of peace and science - is facing massive pressure.
The UK currently sits in the Chair and has the ability and responsibility this year to deliver consensus on protecting the Antarctic. But it requires leadership and diplomacy, not bureaucratic box ticking. Time for the UK to step up. by @zacgoldsmithofficial

White-lipped peccaries have been reintroduced to Piedras Blancas National Park in Costa Rica after a nearly 20 yr absence caused by hunting.
There are so many fantastic people working to rebalance nature.

What is happening to @imrankhan.pti is an abuse on every conceivable level.
Passively monitoring the situation is plainly not enough. It is time for active diplomacy.

Antarctica belongs to us all. It needs our protection. For the 2nd year running, the krill fishery has closed early. Watch #Antarctica2030 champions explain why CCAMLR must act now. by @zacgoldsmithofficial
