A reporter should never become the story … but in all seriousness, I’m honored to explain to readers a little more about ***all this*** and the strange job I have found myself in 🤸‍♀️

🗞️ I’ve spent the last couple months talking to @salman.toor about painting and life. Today’s he’s a cover star of our arts & leisure section. 🎨

On Thursday during his opening at @luhringaugustine, there was a line around the block to see the new paintings that we previewed in this piece. It’s a stark contrast to the opening of his Whitney show, which opened during the pandemic and therefore had about 8 people in attendance.

But the paintings are more than the sum of their popularity — they are frank depictions, pulled from memory, of queer life, the victories and humilities of migration, and the politics of being emotionally honest in a world where we are constantly hedging our bets.

Find the story online for our fantastic videos of his process in the studio

Today’s front page 📰 :: The $712M boom for young artists has shaved a third of its value, leaving careers in its wake.

@juliahalperin and I have talked for a long time about writing a market story that actually looks at the personal and professional impact on artists. Too often, it’s all numbers seen through the eyes of auction executives and wealthy collectors. But on ground level, when you talk to people directly affected by the ups and downs of the market, you see a different picture.

We have been living the conversation this piece has generated, and certainly have plans to look at what is becoming a defining bubble of this generation. by @zacharyhsmall

May // Released a book, had a couple parties, won a journalism award, reported a cyberattack, dressed up my dog 🤷🏻‍♀️

Thank you to everyone who helped make TOKEN SUPREMACY a success. Book writing is such a quiet process that you almost think nobody is going to show up for it, let alone the hundreds of people who attended the launch events.

There is so much more I want to say here, but I will let the book do the talking. Now available…everywhere and link in bio to buy!

Our big reveal before TOKEN SUPREMACY arrives on shelves May 21 💰🔥 today’s Sunday Business section of @nytimes reveals what really happening to burst the NFT bubble — an auction that went terribly wrong, as wrong as it gets. Perhaps fraudulently so.

But it was more than a $30M crypto scam. It came after the Treasury released a report saying, actually, there was very little money laundering in the art world. My reporting revealed massive faults in the Treasury report, including its key finding of $3 billion actually coming from a bogus statistic from 1990.

More upsetting, that bogus statistic has been kicking around government documents from the UK to the UN. $3 billion is likely a wild underestimate of the financial crimes happening in the art market. But the Treasury was unwilling to look despite an order from Congress.

Why? Preorder TOKEN SUPREMACY now 😘 by @zacharyhsmall

If you pay attention to one thing in the art world right now, it should be the Christie’s hack, which is not only jeopardizing their $840M sales season, but testing the loyalty of clients.

Most collectors I spoke to yesterday were hearing about the hack for the first time, despite the cyberattack occurring on at least Thursday. When I went to Christie’s I was told the CEO was out of the office and heard employees saying the website was already fixed. But in reality it was another fake website, one built through a free web design company to present an image of business as usual.

As of Sunday morning, employees have not heard from leaders of this is a ransomware attack and if hackers accessed sensitive client information. That kind of info would be similar to if a major financial institution was hacked.

But auctions are really only a few people in a room competing for paintings. If the company can make those collectors feel confident, will it matter? But what does that say about the true function of the art market? by @zacharyhsmall
