Hey, I’m Zach!

I grew up in a rural town in Southern Oregon and moved to Los Angeles at 19. Somehow, 14 years later, LA is still home.

Nature was a huge part of my childhood. I grew up around agriculture, hunting, and a family of outdoorsmen, and those experiences shaped who I am. Even after moving to a city, I knew I needed to keep that part of myself alive.

I have an identical twin, and growing up we spent so much time outside together. I was fascinated by biology and how everything in nature fits together. The more I learned, the more I understood myself too.

Now I try to get into deep nature once or twice a month, whether that means camping, skiing, or backpacking. I have a few “reset spots” near LA where I can step away from the noise and check in with myself.

For a long time, I thought being gay and loving the outdoors were separate parts of me. I didn’t see many queer people in outdoor spaces, and I absorbed the idea that those worlds didn’t really go together.

Nature helped change that.

When you’re outside, you realize that difference does not mean you don’t belong. We are part of nature too. There was never anything unnatural about me in the first place.
The outdoors also gives me a break from performance. Living in LA and existing as a queer person, there can be so much noise around identity, image, and who you’re supposed to be. In nature, all of that falls away. I feel more like myself there.

Some of my favorite memories are adventures that required waking up in the middle of the night, driving for hours, or hiking deep into nowhere to witness something incredible. No shade to the club, but those moments will always mean more to me.

If I could talk to my younger self, I’d tell him to pay attention to those cold 4 a.m. mornings hunting with my dad. Take it in. Those moments are more special than you realize.

Right now, I’m looking forward to returning to Kauai later this year. It brings me back to myself every time. Quiet, grounded, restorative, and a reminder to keep choosing what makes me feel most alive.

This def takes the cake for one of the most bizarre wildlife encounters I’ve had! Honestly it was such a thrill to see but I’m happy they both live to battle another day. 🦅 🐍
