This was inspired by a painting by Jessie Willcox Smith. I wanted to explore narrative illustration a bit more, so I used her composition as a starting point. I had a lot of fun working on this and am already busy planning the next one. by @zachstubing

Delft Horse, colored pencil on paper (available)

I’m trying to embrace experimentation this year, so I thought it was high time to pick up my neglected colored pencils. I’m still not sure how to use them properly, so a monochromatic piece inspired by Dutch tiles seemed like a fun place to start. I was surprised by how smoothly they blend, but working with them definitely gave me a newfound appreciation for artists who use them exclusively.

Dove Valentine, paper cutout

I’ve always loved Hans Christian Andersen’s paper cutouts and wanted to try making one of my own. It’s a little rough around the edges (literally and figuratively), but the handmade quality of paper-cuts is what I find charming about them. And if you missed seeing them in my stories, the last photo is of some candies I recently made. Happy Valentine’s Day!

Parisian cat, ink on paper (available)

After an unintended hiatus from inking, I thought it was time to refamiliarize myself with the medium. This piece is a study of a J J Grandville illustration - the cat’s muff seemed especially appropriate for the winter weather. I don’t own a muff myself, but have been thwarting the cold with a Dickens novel and pears poached in Earl Grey tea.

I’m not much of a baker, but you can usually count on me for two things: Christmas cookies and my mom’s birthday cake. I know it’s not what I typically share, but I always find it interesting to see how someone’s artistic voice translates into non-traditional mediums. And for anyone wondering, it’s chocolate cake with raspberry whipped cream filling.

Portrait study, graphite on paper (available)

I’ve been tinkering with an idea for a larger piece and needed some portrait practice. As much of a challenge as her face was, I think I spent most of the time trying to figure out the ribbon on her dress. The original painting is Mélanie Renouard de Bussière (1857), by Franz-Xaver Winterhalter.

Barn Owl, oil on paper (prints available)

I’ve been busy prepping for a market later this month, so I’m glad this painting dried with enough time to have prints made. I think I’m still holding my breath from painting the tiny music notes on the roll of sheet music. It wasn’t a strict study, but the owl was inspired by one of Melchior d’Hondecoeter’s many birds.

Meowth and Persian, graphite on paper (sold)

Whenever I’m struck with a bout of creative block, I start doodling Pokémon in my sketchbook. It’s a fun challenge to honor the original designs while incorporating my own ideas. I like to imagine I’m a 19th century New England naturalist recording these creatures for the first time. I try to adhere to the time period and location, taking inspiration from the local flora and fauna.
