Film & Poetry - What the River Says: Rivierkreeften Edition
Visiting Sundance alumnus, indie filmmaker Zack Godshall wants to build a storytelling bridge between the Netherlands and Louisiana. For a flood-filled evening, he and his friend poet who lives in Delft, Vincent Cellucci, will creatively exchange stories exploring the environment and cultures of their homes and swamp psyches. Join us for an experimental two sets of poetry & short films to find out what the river says or maybe even document what the river says to you—

Performance. Ritual. Elements: Water, Fire.

Natalia Uzieblo, art curator from Warsaw and Marialena Chasekidou, creative practitioner from Thessaloniki, invite you on a brief journey inward — where DEIK meets Nature, and emotion meets Water.

What The River Says event at TU Delft…first time in years I’ve watched The Boatman on the big screen with a crowd. Very special to be able to keep sharing this little film about these beautiful people who lived an incredible life way outside the St. Bernard Parish levees. Had a great discussion afterwards with Angeliki Sioli, Janina Gosseye, and Jelmer Teunissen. Talked about and around all sorts of watery themes: telling stories about living with water in disastrous times and places, waterways and stories buried by progress, mound builders in Louisiana and the Netherlands, beavers, how organizing your pessimism can be a catalyst for courage, and for what watery futures is it still reasonable to hope and dream (one answer: get comfortable with muddiness).

My three Louisiana “disaster” films—Low and Behold, Water Like Stone and The Boatman—are playing at TU Delft this month. This unintentional trilogy begins with comedy and tragedy, then turns to elegy, and ends in triumph (aka a St. Bernard parish shrimp “burl”). Doing my part to bring a little bit of the swamp to the Low Countries

I got a Fulbright(!) to spend the spring at @tudelft in the Netherlands. I'll be looking into stories in their watery lowlands...which just so happen to share some things in common with the lowlands here in Louisiana. @lsu put together a story about it all, as well as a video interview where I do my best to explain what I'm up to. @themuseumofmodernart is playing my short doc The Boatman as part of When the World Broke Open, a film series honoring the New Orleans region for the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.

The Boatman will play before the contemporary classic Eve’s Bayou on August 28th at 4pm and on August 31st at 1pm.

A few highlights from my watery explorations in the Netherlands.

1-3 / The boy and me at the Maeslant Storm Surge Barrier, part of the Delta Works and one of the biggest movable structures in the world. That big river-looking-ship-channel is the Nieuwe Waterweg, the artificial mouth of the Rhine River.

Started this lark of a project @hogwashtv back in 2013 with my partner in crime @rossjacksonb and a handful of ne’er-do-wells, a few lawyers (some yet to be), a couple of exchange students from the UK, a bayou boat captain, and some great actors, many of whom had never acted before. Somehow ten years went by and somehow the lark turned into a 6+ hour extravaganza featuring most of my friends, including me and my partner in crime, a lotta folks whose names I never caught, and my entire family, even one who wasn’t born til 2021! Now you can see Hogwash…if you can make it to @acadianacenterforthearts in Lafayette between now and March 11. This Saturday…March 4…is the extra special “Evening of Hogwash,” which is kinda like an old school lock in (minus the part where they lock the doors)…doors open at 4:30. Show starts 5, ends at 11:30.
