One year ago today, I was caught in an avalanche while heli backcountry snowboarding in Utah with some of my best friends, Doug, Shane, Chase, and Ed.

In the moment I did everything I could to survive. Deploy my airbag. Maintain the best body position possible. Backstroke like my life depended on it. Fighting to stay near the surface while layers of snow and ice crashed down on top of and around me as I was carried along with the avalanche.

At one point during the slide I was buried more than 3 feet over head in the avalanche debris. Adrenaline was pumping!

Then the slide came to a stop, where I was very fortunate to wash out at the bottom of the avalanche path only half buried and uninjured.

This experience reinforced what going into the backcountry means. Preparation, training, and physical conditioning are not optional when you are out there. You need a good team and proper equipment.

Truly a blessing to have survived. Every day I am reminded and humbled by this experience. Grateful for my friends and family.

Jones Beach Ironman 70.3 ✅
First Ironman Middle Distance Triathlon
1.2 mile swim x 56 mile bike x 13.1 mile run

Pretty amazing feeling finishing a race like this alongside friends and family. Thank you @colemorriello and @robertdoran ! This was a super fun journey training together, early mornings, hard workouts, massive meals and lots of good laughs. Looking forward to many more!

Was a memorable day having my dad, aunt, uncle and Wileen there for the whole experience. Much love ❤️
