At 86 years young, my grandmother, Mrs. Odessa Grant, has spent decades preserving and celebrating African culture through her boutique, A Touch of Afrika in Savannah, Georgia.

This week, she reached another milestone.

She made the first sale of a necklace she personally designed and created herself.

Not a curated piece.
Not a resale.

A design born from her own imagination, her own hands, and a lifetime of creativity.

Watching her embrace this new chapter has reminded me that purpose doesn’t retire. Creativity doesn’t have an expiration date. There’s always another phase waiting for us—if we’re willing to answer the call.

The way you love yourself determines the way you create.

Before we can build healthy families, thriving communities, or lasting legacies, we have to rebuild our relationship with ourselves.

Self-love isn’t vanity.
It isn’t isolation.
It isn’t indulgence.

It’s the daily practice of remembering your inherent worth and allowing that remembrance to shape how you think, create, love, and lead.

The cost of self-love is the courage to release everything that keeps you disconnected from who you were created to become.

The reward?

A life rooted in integrity instead of approval.
Creativity instead of comparison.
Service instead of performance.
Love that doesn’t have to be chased because it can finally be both received and reciprocated sustainably.

When we cultivate ourselves, our relationships deepen.

Legacy looks different when you can hold it in your hands. ❤️

This Juneteenth was more than another vending event for me—it was a full-circle moment.

I had the honor of vending alongside my 86-year-old grandmother, Mrs. Odessa Grant, founder of A Touch of Afrika here in Savannah. For over three decades, she’s been handcrafting and curating African-inspired adornments that celebrate beauty, culture, and resilience.

Watching people light up as they tried on her necklaces reminded me that jewelry can be so much more than an accessory. It can awaken confidence. It can spark conversation. It can carry memory.

Over the next several days, we’ll be introducing more of her collection as we photograph and upload each piece to the website. Every necklace has its own character, and every design carries decades of creativity, craftsmanship, and love.

And we’re just getting started.

Soon, we’ll also begin sharing my grandfather’s artwork, bringing another piece of our family’s creative legacy into this next chapter of Rooted In Style ATL.

I @zahvdl am so proud to reveal fellow designer at 86 years young, my Grand Mother, The Mrs Odessa Grant’s designer jewelry! Look for her boldest collection yet beginning in the very next reel!

As a first generation born outside of Cape Verde, Mrs Grant has always revered Africa as home. Her touch of style having owned and operated “A Touch Of Afrika Boutique” which has carried African Artifacts, Textiles, Clothes and more for 30 plus years. In the last stride before retiring from the business, leaving it the hands of her grandson, she wants nothing more than to make jewelry and travel. There were moments I questioned everything.

New city.

New opportunities to become who I’ve been praying to be.

Somewhere between the marsh, the markets, the mushrooms/trees, the quiet mornings, creating jewelry, caring for family, and learning to slow down… I realized I wasn’t starting over.

I was growing roots.

These moments aren’t just memories.

They’re evidence that purpose often grows quietly before it blooms publicly.

Energetically sending shalom and love to all war zones, people hurting and hungry, babies who did not make it to see another sunrise..knowing that The Most High will restore all that has been lost, all of the hurt, the pain, the trauma, the sickness. Peace will be restored!! Everything is properly choreographed so I release and let go of fear. Fear makes us unbalanced, trust that everything is working out divinely as it should. Source/God/The Most High/ The youniverse is an infinite source of love, consciousness! Earth was created to self sustain and to experience, so be free, be happy, be love! Express yourself, don’t limit yourself! This is a journey of becoming, and the journey prepares you for the destination as we are forever evolving and transforming. The real war on this planet is actually the war within each of us..but our frequency is powerful enough to be the lighthouse in this realm. So speak your truth, because it creates a ripple and more light dissolves darkness! Be kind, and choose to give love. So many people don’t know what love feels like. We are all one, the Earth is one body and we are finite cells within this one being. We must be at harmony with one another, as divine reflections. We are abundantly provided for, everything we need is here. 🙏🏾 Just be love, no one is more than you. We are all special! The Most High flows through every breath that we take. How do you know you love yourself? Do you tell it to yourself? Do you give yourself rest when it’s earned? Do you provide yourself words of encouragement? Do you choose healthy habits and quality foods and minerals. Are you mindful to your emotions? Pushing yourself to face your doubts, limitations and expectations while accept that you can change your reality? Working out has become my therapy for the past couple weeks because I’m strengthening my ability to journey within when the outside world seems too chaotic and unchanging allowing me to alchemist my emotions in a beneficial way resulting in being more magnetic and materializing a higher vibrational vortex.

After witnessing My Grandmother faint and be breifly hospitalized the day after Mother’s Day to the next day creating/capturing memories like this and to see my grandmother walking with a smile on her face surrounding by her husband, a handful of her children and grand children and even some great grands, is truly worth all the turbulence I’ve experienced in this transition. Plus as a huge MJ fan the movie was soo good I can’t wait to watch it again and again!!! 10/10 must see with your family !!! by @zahvdl

Life gets heavy, that’s why you have to lift, train or push yourself beyond extreme comfort into discomfort. That’s when you reveal to yourself what you’re made of, it’s up to you to note of your gains even if no body else ever notices. Your workout are sacred transformation chambers. Once an adult, twice a child. Seize the mindset of self control so that you aren’t possessed by the spirit of seeking to control others because you can control yourself. Deepen the reservoirs of self regulation and breathe.
Water your own garden. Be quick to listen and slow to speak and slower to anger and extinguish the embers of wrath and self hate. Pride comes before the fall... by @zahvdl
