Today April 4th is my mother's Birthday, this is the first time in my life I dont have her here with me. Honestly, I have never been this sad in my life, I feel lost, depressed and lacking motivation. My mother was a part of my day to day life on so many levels, in business, artistically, just sitting around together and planning the future. My power moves empowered us. So getting back to normal is gone because my normal is gone. I'm at such a loss for words. I know I have to carry on, for her, for me, but I'll be crying for a long time before I get there. 25 years ago today...
I know your president suddenly was now at ground zero all of a sudden, but I really was there, I got there the night of the 12th, when they were asking for volunteers.

I stood in a line of over 1000 volunteers, we wore hardhats, gloves, and we made a train of orange home depot buckets as we moved debris searching for any signs of life, we didn't know what we were stepping into, it was new to me, the feeling of all the loss of life, you could smell it.

Every so often there would be a glimmer of hope, they would scream out for everyone to be quiet, imagine the absence of sound in lower Manhattan with 1000's of volunteers, we stopped they brought in the dogs, and we all stood silent, with what seemed like an eternity, hoping that we would find someone, alive hopefully, but just find someone. As I was there this happened multiple times through the night, but we never found anyone....

We were tired, hungry, defeated but resilient, we were determined to find our fellow New Yorkers.
The police dept took over the Burger King on the corner, and spray painted NYPD temporary headquarters outside, The fire dept set up shop at their engine company, people were in Brooks Brothers shopping, and the conversations I had and the ones I heard were more sinister than planes, I've always been skeptical of the planes taking out the building, logical physics won't allow it, but that's another story.

We lost so many lives that day and the week I spent at Ground Zero was one that changed me, I tried to help, I wanted to contribute as a New Yorker, I wanted to bring some hope. We didn't find anyone physically, but we found each other spiritually.

I took 18 pictures from a disposable camera and these are a few, I was really there, and in some ways I still am.

We are working on an exhibit of all my images from Ground Zero, more to come.

Today I learned of the passing of the brother @thelegendaryblackice I had the honor of working with him on an augmented reality project to celebrate the Centennial of the Negro leagues in 2020. I asked him to tell the story of baseball as only he could; powerful, poignant, and poetic, he gave a voice to the apparel labeled Negro leagues, he taught us through his wordplay who we are not only on the field but in the world. It was an honor to work with the brother and have some deep conversations about life, family, Amsterdam, Suriname and everything in between.

We planned to do more....

Rest well brother, my condolences to his family and friends.
