Is this the beginning of Casa Nin? 🌞 When my mom and I created Zajal, we intended it to be more than an interior design studio. We wanted to create what we called Zajal Living: our own properties that would carry our heritage, our stories, our feelings, transforming them into sensorial experiences that would move whoever they reach.

Naturally, the first project that we will have is the house that belonged to my maternal grandparents. This is a house where we had our Christmases, where I harvested grapes for the first time and where I found my first real-life companion: Nin. Nin had clearly been abandoned in the fields nearby, and it was love at first sight. Most of you knew her. Those were the first pictures I took of her - still in that area.

We are going to renovate this house. 🫶 I can’t wait to share with you the entire process. And as with any book, it needs a name. Is it too sentimental of me to want to name it Casa Nin? But then again, this will be all about passages of life and that was the most special of them all.

I’ve been collecting places I think are worth knowing. Now, I’m sharing them as part of our Zajal beautiful world 🌞

You know I tend to look at the world through a lens that connects history, context, politics, stories and design. Lately, I’ve been studying Asmara, often referred to as Africa’s Modernist City.

Between the 1930s and early 1940s, the Eritrean capital became an extraordinary ground for Italian modernism. But it is impossible, and mostly wrong, to separate this architecture from the context in which it was built. Much of the Asmara we admire today was created under Italian colonial and Fascist rule, as part of an imperial vision for the city.

What fascinates me is what happened afterwards. Eritreans inherited this architecture, lived in it, adapted it and eventually made it part of a city and an identity entirely their own.

Currently working on a residential project where the client has thousands of books. 🌞 We’re designing a bespoke bookshelf that will host their library curated over time. Sources of inspiration are the house itself (space, light and materials), other projects, books, and, of course, cultural context like writers, editors, bookshops. What stays is usually a feeling. 🌞

At @casarosadasayulita , a project we love, that feeling comes through colour, tile, filtered light, organic shapes and a kind of layered abundance that never loses its ease.

It feels expansive and intimate at once. Each room seems to reveal another gesture as if the house was made to be discovered slowly.

What we love most is the authorship. Nothing feels generic. Nothing feels afraid of character. It is a private home, a resort, a story and a mood, all held together by a very clear point of view.

Some ideas take years to become reality. Zajal began long before it had a name.

It began through a lifelong fascination with the way places shape us. Through homes that stayed in memory long after we left them. Through architecture, interiors, landscapes and objects that carried a distinct point of view. Through the belief that the spaces we inhabit should not only support our lives, but reveal something about who we are.

Based in Lisbon, Zajal works across interior design, property positioning and development.

Our approach begins with narrative and it's defined by authorship. We are interested in the stories, rituals, aspirations and sensibilities that make each person, property or place different from the next. We translate those elements into atmosphere, materiality and spatial identity to create environments that feel deeply personal and impossible to replicate.

Because a home should never feel like a collection of references. It should feel like the origin of one.
