This morning I won my age group in the Lake Wilderness triathlon. Not that cool in isolation but:

A year ago, I was just finishing up my senior year of college. Last June, I did this same race, hungover from the night before, and got nearly last, pretty much limping over the finish line. I had made a training plan for the spring, but largely neglected it. At that stage in life, it felt like the only thing that mattered was when and where the pregame was, what bar we were going to, etc. There was no progress towards any long term goals or aspirations. Sure, it was fun, but it was all just immediate gratification.

Fast forward to 6 months ago, I was poorly adjusting to adulthood. Living alone for the first time, trying to settle into a routine of having a full time job, with all the noise and dopamine was gone I was left all alone to decide how to spend my time. At first, it was super paralyzing, and it ended up putting me into a place where I wasn’t taking good care of my health or doing anything productive with my life. Trying to make adulthood feel like an extension of college, but failing miserably.

Now, it’s been a whole year of change and new experiences. As I finish up my first year as an adult, here’s some of the most valuable things I’ve learned:

Your life is just that- YOUR life. Nobody is coming to save you. If you know what you want, go get it. If you don’t, figure it out. Either way, don’t let other people control your happiness. If your friends won’t go with you, go alone. Good things don’t come to those who wait, they come to those who do shit. Surround yourself with people who have what you want. If you’re the smartest, fastest, or strongest in the room, you’re in the wrong room.

But at the same time, don’t take shit so seriously. One day you’re gonna die and the suns going to keep rising and setting like you never existed. So just smile and enjoy the ride 😛 by @zane.lee
