If I had only 3 days to experience Zanzibar, this is the itinerary I’d choose.

DAY 1
Start with the history and character of Stone Town, then take a boat to Prison Island to meet the giant tortoises.

DAY 2
Spend the day on the water with Safari Blue; sailing, snorkeling, swimming and relaxing on Zanzibar’s beautiful sandbanks.

DAY 3
Head into nature at Jozani Forest, cool off with a swim in Maalum Cave, then finish the day with lunch at The Rock Restaurant.

Three days may not be enough to experience everything Zanzibar has to offer, but this gives you a beautiful mix of culture, ocean and nature.

PRIVATE GROUND PACKAGE | PER PERSON
1 person — $520
2–3 people — $380 pp
4–7 people — $320 pp

INCLUSIVES ✅
Hotel Pick-up & Drop-off | All Entry & Conservation Fees | Boat Rides | Professional Guide | Seafood BBQ Lunch | Table Reservations at The Rock Restaurant | Water & Snacks

For a first-time visitor, I would never recommend an itinerary that tries to squeeze every popular excursion into a few days.

Mnemba Island.
Stone Town.
Prison Island.
Nakupenda.
Safari Blue.
Sunset dhow cruise.. etc

And then you still want to fit in beach days, restaurants, beach clubs and “a little time to relax.” 😂

Before you know it, your holiday has turned into a schedule.

And that’s the part I don’t love.

Because Zanzibar isn’t somewhere I’d recommend experiencing by simply ticking off excursions.

Take Kizimkazi, for example.

You might know it as one of the quieter, more local and laid-back parts of the island.

But during the Kizimkazi Festival?

Suddenly, it’s fireworks, live music, artists, dancing, lights and an entire crowd celebrating.

Who would have planned for that?

That’s why your itinerary needs some breathing room.

Your excursions should make sense together.
Your location should make sense for what you want to do.
And you should have enough time to actually enjoy where you are.

You don’t need to do everything Zanzibar has to offer.

You need the right experiences, at the right pace, for your trip.

And maybe… leave a little room for Zanzibar to surprise you.

Not every Zanzibar experience has to be busy to be unforgettable.

I recently visited The Garden Cave by Salaam Cave, and what I loved most was how peaceful it was. For a while, it was just me, the sea turtles, crystal-clear water, and the sound of nature.

If you’re someone who enjoys quieter places and would rather escape the crowds than follow them, I think you’ll appreciate this hidden corner of Zanzibar.

If I only had one day to experience Zanzibar, this is the itinerary I’d choose.

08:00 AM
Start the morning exploring the historic streets of Stone Town. Slow down, grab a local coffee and take in the island’s rich history.

10:30 AM
Head to Prison Island to meet the giant tortoises and discover one of Zanzibar’s most iconic attractions.

01:00 PM
Continue to Nakupenda Sandbank for a relaxing afternoon of swimming, sunbathing and fresh seafood.

05:30 PM
End the day with a traditional sunset dhow cruise. There’s no better way to watch the sun disappear over the Indian Ocean.

One day is never enough to experience everything Zanzibar has to offer, but it’s enough to make you want to come back.

Planning a trip to Zanzibar? Tell me when you’d like to visit, and I’ll recommend an itinerary that fits your travel style.

I almost asked for a refund at my beachfront resort in Zanzibar… until a few hours later. 🌊

This is the exact same beach.

One of the most beautiful things about Zanzibar is that the ocean changes throughout the day. If you don’t know how the tides work, it’s easy to think something is wrong, when it’s actually just nature doing what it does best.

That’s why where you stay matters just as much as knowing what to expect.

Have you ever experienced tides like this?

I wish I’d known this before traveling to Zanzibar.

When I first started planning my trip, I thought finding the perfect hotel was the most important decision.

Looking back, I would’ve planned it differently.

The first thing I’d choose isn’t the hotel, it’s the part of Zanzibar that matches the kind of experience I want.

Here’s how I’d think about it:

📍 Stone Town
Perfect if you enjoy history, culture, cafés and exploring on foot.

📍 Nungwi & Kendwa
Ideal for white sandy beaches, swimming, lively evenings and unforgettable sunsets.

📍 Paje & Jambiani
Best for a slower pace, beach cafés, kitesurfing and long walks by the ocean.

📍 Michamvi
A great choice if you’re looking for peace, privacy and a quieter escape.

Once you’ve chosen the right area, choosing the right hotel becomes much easier.

The best hotel isn’t always the best choice. The best location is.

Planning a trip to Zanzibar? Tell me what kind of holiday you’re looking for, and I’ll recommend the area that suits you best.

The thing is, there’s more to choosing a hotel than what you see online.

Luxury photos don’t tell you the full story.

A resort can have incredible service and beautiful suites, but if it doesn’t match the logistics of the island, your trip can feel harder than it should.

Before you arrive, check these 7 details:

1. Location & Distance: Are you hours away from the excursions you actually want to do?
2. Tidal Shifts: Does the ocean recede significantly during the day, leaving you without the swimming beach you expected?
3. Beach Vibe: Is it a calm, secluded stretch, or a busy area with lots of activity around you?
4. Transport Logistics: Will getting anywhere require expensive or lengthy taxi rides every day?
5. Trip Atmosphere: Does the property’s energy match what you want, a peaceful retreat, social hub, or family-friendly stay?
6. Seasonal Weather: How do local wind and weather patterns affect that specific side of the island during your travel dates?
7. Overall Value: Is the property price leaving you with enough room in your budget to actually explore?

A beautiful hotel isn’t automatically a well-planned holiday.

The right stay should complement your entire itinerary, not isolate you from it.

Save this checklist before your trip, or send it to someone heading to Zanzibar soon.

I almost asked for a refund at my beachfront resort in Zanzibar.

I booked it expecting crystal-clear turquoise water right outside my room.

Instead… the ocean had disappeared.

For a moment, I genuinely thought something was wrong.

Then I learned about Zanzibar’s dramatic tides.

The same beach can look completely different just a few hours later.

At high tide, you’ll see the turquoise waters Zanzibar is famous for.

At low tide, the ocean pulls back, revealing sandbanks, coral and long stretches of beach.

It wasn’t a bad resort.

It wasn’t misleading photos.

It was simply nature doing what it has always done in Zanzibar.

Understanding the tides before you visit can completely change your experience of the island.

Planning a trip to Zanzibar? Tell me when you’re visiting, and I’ll help you choose the best beaches and experiences for your travel dates.

Something didn’t add up while planning my Zanzibar trip.

At first, I thought 3 days would be enough.

Then I looked at everything I wanted to experience.

Your first day is usually spent arriving, checking in and settling into your hotel.

By the third day, you’re already checking out and preparing for your journey home.

That leaves you with just one full day to experience Zanzibar.

Now imagine trying to explore Stone Town, visit Prison Island and Nakupenda Sandbank, snorkel around Mnemba Island, see the rare red colobus monkeys in Jozani Forest, swim with dolphins in Kizimkazi, enjoy a sunset dhow cruise, or even take a trip to Pemba to see whale sharks during the season.

That’s when I realized 3 days wasn’t enough.

For most first-time visitors, I’d recommend at least 5 nights. Not because there are more places to tick off a list, but because Zanzibar deserves to be experienced, not rushed.

Leave time to enjoy the beach without watching the clock.

Talk to local people.

Learn a few Swahili words.

Watch the tide change.

Those are often the moments you’ll remember long after the trip is over.

The best trips aren’t the ones where you do the most. They’re the ones where you truly experience the place you’re visiting.

Planning a trip to Zanzibar? Tell me how many days you’re thinking of staying, and I’ll happily suggest an itinerary that makes the most of your time.

One of the questions we hear most is, “When is the best time to visit Zanzibar?”

There isn’t one perfect season, it depends on the kind of trip you’re planning.

June to October is ideal if you’re after sunny days and comfortable weather. December to February is perfect for warm tropical beach holidays. And March to May is Zanzibar’s rainy season, which also means fewer visitors and, in many cases, better hotel rates for flexible travelers.

If you’re not sure which season suits your plans, send ZanziSelect a DM. We’ll help you choose the best time for your trip.

Ever wondered what $500 looks like in Zanzibar?

✈️ Flights (local): $120
🏨 Stay (3 nights): $210
🍽 Food: $60
🚗 Transport: $60
🎶 Nights out: $40

Total: $490

I live in Zanzibar, but I tested this as a tourist, and this is the real cost.

The truth?
👉 Same budget, different experience.

Instead of nights out, you could use that $40 for experiences like @salaam_cave @jozani_forest or even a butterfly tour.

And if you’re flying internationally, your flight is separate,
which means you can even use that extra $120 for more experiences like sandbanks or Stone Town tours.

Planning is everything.
