At 8:33 pm on 2/13/23 I received an email that read “shots fired”. I didn’t think much of it since we tend to get these notifications more often than I would like, which in itself is heartbreaking. All of a sudden I was getting text after text and call after call. I couldn’t believe what was happening. By the grace of God I stayed home that night because I was randomly too tired to drive back to MSU. However, during that time I’ll never forget the feeling of my heart stopping as I frantically texted and called Carter to make sure he was safe. First call, no answer. Tears began to stream down my face as my brain ran through every possible scenario. He was on his way to the union that night, but a man driving a car pulled up next to him and told him what was going on. As he ran to safety, he answered my second call. He confirmed that he was safe and in lockdown. At that moment, I thanked God. I never thought this would happen, no one does until it does. This world needs to change. My heart breaks for the families of the victims. I have comfort knowing that those who passed are being embraced in God’s loving arms and that God is good even though the world is not. And for those who are still in the hospital, I pray you have strength and bravery and keep fighting. I continue to pray and send love to every person that this tragic event has affected.
