One of the techniques I use for tying silk yarn when weaving Persian carpets. 🧶

This is one of my go to methods, and I’ve also shared another silk knotting technique here on my page.

Which method do you prefer?

I’ve been combining Soumak with Persian carpet weaving, and I really like the texture this combination creates. The techniques are different, but they work beautifully together.

Sumak is an ancient weaving technique with a history going back thousands of years.
Some of the oldest known Sumak fragments were found in Gordion, in Anatolia, dating back to around the 7th century BC. The technique later became part of the rich weaving traditions of Anatolia, the Caucasus, and Iran.
Here’s one row of Sumak weaving.

This is the part of varni weaving I never get tired of: watching simple threads slowly turn into something with character.

My Slit Kilim Weaving Course is available for those who want to learn the technique step by step.

A carpet doesn’t begin with the knot. It begins with the preparation.

In this reel, I’m showing the process of setting up the loom, preparing the warp, starting the weaving, and adding a few carpet knots.

From the structure of the loom to the first stages of weaving, every step has its own purpose.
