⚠️Instructor Bio Alert⚠️
Introducing (if you didn’t already know) our esteemed teacher/founder/original AK Robert Zimmerman! Here’s a little something about Rob:

Beginning the Beverly Hills Playhouse San Francisco in 2009 with 7 students, Rob, and later on with Peter, has grown the BHP/SF to nearly 100 students in 5 classes. In addition to serving as Artistic Director for the Firescape Theatre, Rob has directed several plays including the SF premiere of Engagement, The Importance of Being Earnest, Four Dogs & a Bone, Sexual Perversity in Chicago and Talk Radio starring Peter Allas. Most recently, he produced and directed a widely acclaimed rendition of Yellow Face by David Henry Wang, with sold out shows in both San Francisco and Los Angeles.

Rob started working professionally at age eleven at The Sharon Playhouse. The next several years included training with Jack O’Brien (Old Globe Theater) and Tony Richardson (British National Theater) and some 60 stage productions from Connecticut to San Diego.

After taking a break to do some globe trotting, Rob arrived in LA to begin learning about Film & TV. He has appeared in Twin Peaks, HBO’s The Larry Sanders Show, Port Charles and starred in the BBC made for TV movie, Murder, Too. Other film credits include the controversial Don’s Plum with Leonardo DiCaprio & Tobey Maguire and Working Trash with Ben Stiller and George Carlin. Rob also worked onstage in LA’s The Matrix Theater’s The Tavern and the Beverly Hills Playhouse as the lead in Prelude to a Kiss.

Rob became a student of Milton Katselas in 1991, and over the next decade plus, he dedicated himself not only to his studies but to the growth of other students as well. He is fascinated with the process of actors discovering what elements of the teaching work best for them. Now, teaching as many as seven classes per week and commuting between San Francisco and Z/A’s Los Angeles classes, Rob has for over 30 years helped guide literally thousands of students to the rewards offered by Milton Katselas’ technique and his vision of ‘a room full of stars.’ He is excited by all the possibilities of expanding his creative efforts with into Z/A Studio! taken in California by @zastudiola

🌟 Ted Lange - Iconic tv star, Shakespearian scholar, and prolific theater writer/director, visited z/a studio San Francisco, on the opening weekend of his original play, 'Shakespeare Over My Shoulder', that ran at the African-American Shakespeare Company in SF.

With his inimitable humor, vast passion and experience in the art and science of show, he shared gems on acting, showbiz, and even treated us with impromptu Shakespearian soliloquies. A master of his crafts, we were honored to have him come play with us. 🙏🏻

👏🏻 Special thanks to our wonderful z/a teacher, Christine Kludjian, for hosting this interview. And to our incredible z/a SF executives - Karma Noel Nichols, Isabella Davis, Tony Cardoza and Thuan Lieu for all their help in putting this together. Thank you also to the videographer, Brian Jian 📸 taken in San Francisco, California by @zastudiola

Many congratulations to z/a actor - Michelle Mao - who is setting the screen on fire! Michelle kicked off her year in the latest season of the very bingeworthy Bridgerton as the wickedly evil sister, Rosamund Li. She then starred in the atmospheric and "unforgettable" movie - zi - that was widely applauded at the Sundance Film Festival. Next, she joins the HBO post-apocalytic drama as a key character in its third season - The Last of Us.

"Since Michelle started studying with us some 8-9 years ago, she has been a consistent powerhouse of talent, discipline and hard work. She takes what we have to offer and really runs with it," says Rob Zimmerman, z/a studio co-founder.

@michelleforbreakfast Michelle is proof training, dedication and a leap of faith can really launch your dreams. We are so incredibly proud of her and are all cheering from the house! 🙌🏻🥂👏🏻 by @zastudiola

As the medical pathologist studies the diseased cell in order to better understand the workings of the human body, the artist draws our attention to emotional pathology so that we may better understand the mind and spirit of a character.

Listen to Rob Zimmerman, z/a founder and faculty teacher, break down pathology with relatable character examples from Milton Katselas' book - 'Acting Class, Take a Seat'.

"What is it that creates the psychologies of behavior? Psychology and pathology are not the same things. Actors turn psychology into behavior... But beneath that, the root is pathology."

What are some of your favorite character pathologies to play? by @zastudiola

Listen to this ⬆️#workingactor

Training provides the foundation of knowledge, but practice is what turns that knowledge into instinct. Whether you are mastering a craft, a sport, or a professional skill, the hours spent behind the scenes are what make the performance look effortless.#workingactor #scenestudyclass #aspiringactor #actingwisdom taken in Hollywood - Los Angeles by @zastudiola

A resolution is often just the spark—the “firm promise” you make on January 1st. But working on your dreams is the fire that keeps burning long after the holiday decorations come down.

The main differences are:

Timeline: A resolution is a moment; a dream is a marathon.

Action: Resolutions focus on what you want to change; goals focus on how you’re going to show up every single day.

Mindset: A resolution is a “yes” or “no” (did I go to the gym?), while pursuing a dream is about growth and resilience (what did I learn when I missed a day?).

The bottom line: A resolution gets you to the starting line, but your long-term resolve is what carries you across the finish.

zastudiola z/a Studios is a primarily scene study based acting studio with an approach to the craft rooted in the teachings of legendary industry leader Milton Katselas.

Our approach:
- Acting: honing the beautiful craft itself.
- Attitude: developing the correct state of mind to reach
Success
- Administration: becoming a working professional
- Awareness
