Harvest day on the farm 🌿

Today we pulled cassava and cocoyam straight from the soil. There’s something deeply satisfying about growing food that stores its energy underground — hidden abundance waiting to be uncovered.

These resilient root crops thrive in warm climates and reward patience with an incredible harvest. Cassava gives us a staple rich in energy, while cocoyam brings nourishing food to the table and diversity to the garden system.

This is what real food looks like: grown in living soil, harvested by hand, and shared with community. From soil to plate, the cycle continues.

Today one of our students is working alongside Sam around the natural swimming pool, helping to clean and filter the water the natural way. In a permaculture system, even a swimming pool becomes part of the ecosystem — supporting life, recycling nutrients, and teaching us how water can move in harmony with the landscape.

And of course, no project is complete without a little helper. Tuqi was right there in the middle of the action, observing, exploring, and lending a tiny hand where possible. Small moments like this remind us that learning on the land is something shared across generations.

Working with nature, not against it 🌱

We grow a living ground cover before planting vegetables. It protects the soil and suppresses weeds in our grass-heavy area. As the vegetables grow, we gently cut back the cover crop so the food plants take over the space.

Nothing is wasted — the cut plants become mulch, feeding the soil.

Our cows help too, grazing the nearby food forest and preparing the next garden area naturally.

Soil → plants → animals → food → soil again.

This is permaculture in action.

Every garden tells a story.
