So much of the decisions we make for our health often come down to risk versus reward — but what if we don’t have all the information? In this episode of TED Intersections, physician Dhruv Khullar (@dkhullar) and microbiologist Zack Abbott examine what happens when science can change who we are — including the potential of reengineering the human body — and what medicine might look like in 20 years. Visit the link in @TED’s bio to hear the full conversation.

Your skin has a microbiome, too. And summer can change the conditions it lives in. ☀️🦠

Your skin is home to communities of bacteria, fungi, viruses, and other microorganisms. These microbes interact with your skin and are part of the ecosystem that helps maintain normal skin function.

So what happens in summer?

Research suggests that UV exposure can alter the composition and diversity of the skin microbiome. And in a study of people returning from sunny vacations, researchers observed changes in skin bacterial communities associated with sun exposure and holiday behavior—changes that largely moved back toward baseline after participants returned home.

Heat and sweat matter, too. Sweating changes the moisture, pH, and chemistry of the skin’s surface, which can influence the environment where different microbes live.

The takeaway: your skin microbiome isn’t static. It responds to changes in its environment—including some of the conditions that come with summer.

Supporting your skin barrier, practicing good sun protection, and changing out of damp clothing are simple ways to take care of your skin while it adapts.
