Two years ago I thought I’d achieved my dream, working at an architecture firm in Japan. But I was miserable.

I tried to fill the hole with partying, shopping, travel. Nothing worked. Then it hit me I was burnt out because I wasn’t creating anything. I was just producing.

So when I started my masters, I made one rule, create, don’t produce. Eight months in, I’ve made chairs, booklets, things that are actually mine.

If you’re stuck only producing for a grade, for a job, for someone else’s vision, I see you. I was you. Let’s get through it together. by @zeday.yy

It’s never “just” something.
I had really limited funds for this project and aside from the prints itself, everything was made from materials I already owned. But those extra layers are what transformed a simple print to a functional binder of sorts. Now I have a tangible and suitable loving home for my favourite songs. Not only that, I was able to sell some at a local market, allowing me to meet with other music lovers! A simple piece of paper let me share my passions in a new and interesting way. by @zeday.yy

A look inside my camera roll but also my brain.

I’m pretty bad at photography but I like to use it as part of my design process. It allows me to think through why I find certain things to be beautiful. While giving me the ability to pull inspiration from anywhere, even the most unconventional. by @zeday.yy

Would you try this too?

Experimenting is such an important part of the creative process. For me, every experiment is a step towards overcoming my fear of imperfection. Allowing myself to enjoy the process regardless of the end result. I think this is a key part of creating sustainably. by @zeday.yy

I use music as a way to get me through the harder parts of the design process. When things feel slow, hard or frustrating, music gives me the push to keep going. Here are a few albums I always go back to when I’m feeling this way. Maybe they’ll help you too!

For the fun of it.

Although the original design intent was about expressing complex relationship dynamics through form, I felt the most happy when people were having fun and interacting with the design. Sometimes just having fun is enough.

BEHIND SOFT SCREENS
WEEK(4/4): Material Collage

Making an art portfolio in 4 weeks. Edited this past the 4 week mark butttt I did end up submitting my portfolio on Sunday!

This process has been both extremely rewarding and stressful. I did a lot of things for the first time during this series, making an art portfolio, planning a shoot and editing photos for real, to name a few. But most importantly I learned that I often try to reach for perfection making me not want to post or edit. Forgetting that my skills haven’t caught up to my vision. Although this was disheartening I’m really proud that I still finished everything at the end!

I’m not entirely sure what my next project will be but I’ll see you guys there!

A CHAIR IN PORTRAITS PT.4
WEEK(3/4): Photo Series

Making an art portfolio in 4 weeks. Understanding the tension between body and object. The photo series showcases how the object accepts or rejects the body. I wonder who is in control?

This is the last part of the photo series! I had such a fun time with my friends through the photoshoot process and I’m really grateful to them for participating in making my vision come to life. Although I did lose motivation during the editing process and probably changed these photos too many times, I am happy with the outcome! See you for the next project coming soon.
