A Mother's Day Poem ❤️

You make your entrance, all wrinkled and blue,
My heart explodes, my world now you!
The Sleepless nights, a constant haze,
I hope and pray this is just a phase.

The days are long, and the walls close in.
Is this the life I was destined to win?
Then tears turn to laughter, and hugs make me melt,
This must be the happiest I’ve ever felt.

They grow like weeds, too fast, it seems,
From bedtime stories, to teenage screams.
My spotless house, is now a distant dream,
What once resembled his bedroom, is a chaotic scene.

But through the mess, the noise, the strife,
My love is so fierce for this young life.
For you, my child, I'd sing and dance,
This crazy ride is a joyful trance.

Happy mother’s day to all those, the strong,
Whose selfless acts can do no wrong.
Today is for you, for all that strife,
They are so grateful to have you in their life. 🥰

✨ Embracing the Journey: Parent Mental Health Day ✨

Today marks an important occasion - Parent Mental Health Day, an initiative created in 2022 by @Stem4. It's a day to pause and reflect on the remarkable, often unsung heroes of our daily lives: Parents.

But, broaden the lens a bit, I want to extend a special acknowledgement to those who are navigating the parenting path with neurodivergent children. Your journey is unique, filled with nuanced challenges and extraordinary triumphs. You're not just parenting; you're advocating, educating, and often, rewriting the narrative of neurodiversity in your lived experiences.

In the spirit of positive psychology, I urge every parent, especially those in the neurodivergent community, to recognise and celebrate your strengths. You possess resilience, adaptability, and a profound capacity for empathy. These aren't just parenting skills; they're life-changing superpowers.

🌈 On this day (and every day thereafter), let's aim to reframe our focus. It can be easy to view parenting through a lens of endurance (full disclosure!), but it doesn't take much to see it as an opportunity for growth, learning, and profound joy. Let's share our stories, not just of the challenges, but of the moments of triumph, big or small.

I encourage every parent to take a moment for yourself today. Reflect on your journey, acknowledge your growth, and remember: in the world of parenting, especially neurodiverse parenting, there's no such thing as 'perfect'. There's only one's 'real' lived experience and the unvarnished truth of learning, loving, and growing together, in all its forms.

One amazing study that highlights the power of positive thinking and how it can influence longevity is the ‘Nun Study’ (2001). A group of psychologists followed a cohort of nuns over several decades, analysing their written autobiographies for positive content. Interestingly, nuns who had expressed more positive emotions throughout their lives tended to live longer, but also had a reduced risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease! What’s even more surprising is that the nuns who expressed more positive behaviours showed no/minimal signs of dementia in life, even though clear markers of advanced disease were visible on their brains post-mortem.

If you are fortunate enough to be a mum, take some time today (and every day) to remind yourself what a great job you are doing. Even when you feel like you are making things up as you go along or if you make the odd mistake, give yourself credit for showing up and trying your best. You are amazing, you are loved and you are irreplaceable. #happymothersday #mothersday #mothers #motherhood by @zeenahicks
