Black Belt

Matajuro Yagyu (1613-75) was a famous swordsman during the Edo period.

His father, a fencing teacher to the Shogun, Ieyasu Tokugawa, had disowned him believing he did not have the potential.

Matajuro went to seek out a famous samurai named Banzo, who had retired to Mount Futara.

Matajuro asked “If I become your pupil, how long will it take me to reach competentcy?”

“About ten years,” said Banzo.

“I can’t wait that long” replied Matajuro. “If I work twice as hard. How long will it take me?”

“Thirty years,” said Banzo.

“How is that?” asked Matajuro. “I offered to work twice as hard and you tripled the time!
What if I work every single day. How fast can I get there?”

“Seventy years,” said Banzo “pupil in a hurry does not learn much.”

Matajuro paused and asked “How long will I have to study and practice to be a master swordsman?”
