On World Sepsis Day, we look closer at the cellular landscape of sepsis research.

This scanning electron microscopy image captures red and white blood cells on a layer of platelets in separated blood. The study investigates how human blood reacts to sepsis, an uncontrolled inflammatory response to an infection.

The image has been acquired on a ZEISS MERLIN field emission scanning electron microscope using the InLens detector at 1 kV.

This planet-like image is actually a single drop of pond water. 💧

Artist-researcher @julie.askew uses ZEISS Stemi 305 in darkfield mode to turn dried water-drop residue into intricate patterns. And those patterns can point to contaminants and water quality, from wetlands to glacier melt.

Think ticks are insects? Look closer. 🕷️

Ticks are arachnids – relatives of spiders and scorpions, with eight legs as adults. There are nearly 900 species worldwide, and as blood-feeding parasites some can transmit the pathogens behind Lyme disease and other illnesses.

These images, captured with ZEISS Primostar 3 (brightfield) and ZEISS EVO scanning electron microscope (SEM), make the cuticle, mouthparts and sensory structures strikingly clear. (C) first image: tuzyra / stock.adobe.com

Botany meets artistry. 🌿

These intricate spheres are the pollen grains of a Sonchus plant (daisy family), nestled among its leaves. Alain Tonetti of @univ_amu in France captured the image using scanning electron microscopy and Patrice Bal colorized it.

Their spiny surface reveals how they cling and travel — a structure hidden at the human scale. 🔬

Look closer, and a roadside weed becomes a garden.

The bottleneck was never the image – it was the analysis pipeline.

In spatial biology, removing bottlenecks in analysis is key to unlocking deeper insights into complex biological processes. ZEISS Axioscan 7 spatial biology and Mindpeak's PhenoScout AI now streamline it all: images in, results out.

That's the AI worth appreciating: not replacing the scientist or lab worker, but removing the slow, manual step between a scan and an answer.

Not every sample has to be dried and coated.

To go under an electron microscope, samples are usually dried and gold-coated. Not here:
this false-colored image shows mildew on a living leaf, captured with variable-pressure SEM on ZEISS EVO (C2DX detector, 570 Pa water vapor, 1 °C, 20 kV) – so the hydrated surface stays close to its natural state.

#QuickInsight #ZEISSMicroscopy

When the question is "how does it really look", variable pressure lets you skip aggressive prep – and keep the sample (almost) as it is.
