Nola, Nola, Nola. Where have you been? How could I not have known that all of my life you were only a two day drive and a double-dose of the hairspray soundtrack away? Well thank goodness I came to my senses — with a little help from a friend. Octavian (newly-grad and film legend) and I were inside of you. We put our toes on the pedal and hit that 81 highway singin’, buc’ees pit-stoppin’, and Waffle House grubbin’. To a lack of surprise, we were hit with a wave of southern heat, asking ourselves why we even dared to have packed pants. So, we stuck to repeated outfits and a strict routine. Gumbo here, jambalaya there, a 2pm nap then, and a Bourbon St stroll at ten. It was pretty magical how music danced through the streets of the french quarter, heightened by the magnificent smells of fried dough and salty meats. I didn’t dare eat the alligator though…I thought it’d be bad karma when we went to the bayou. Captain Rick told us that gators can vertically jump half their body length. Bitch…I don’t play about that. Nor do I play about ghosts…which I think I maybe definitely probably surely did experience while in the city. Meanwhile the only haunting Octavian had to survive were my beignet burps. Sorry about that. But they, thanks for introducing me to Whole Foods blueberry muffins and for being the best roadtrip buddy I could have asked for. You’re a lifelong friend of mine and I’m so grateful I got to experience hitting the road with you. by @zeldadams
