Thankful for another year of sound, study, and possibility with my brilliant apprentice, Khyri Porter. 🥳

Here are few more outtakes from our site visit captured back in July.

@michigantradarts has given us the time and freedom to deepen his study of tap as sound expression, musical practice, and living tradition. Alhamdulillah for another season of growth and open doors.

BIG UP to @micah_ling for your continued advocacy of #tapdance, to @livingartsdetroit for the studio and wonderful hospitality, to @nicgareisslfi for sharing his knowledge and thoughtful conversation, and to @cory.marie.photography for the gift of making visible our joy and the relationship we have built within this art form.

Still learning from the dance and letting it teach me how to lead. Bless! taken in Detroit, Michigan by @zelldoesitwell

Getting to learn from my mentor, Ms. Shanzell, through the Michigan Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Program has been such a great experience.

This site visit shown in these photos was a fun experience that gave me another chance to learn, ask questions, and take in more of the history and culture behind the art I’m studying. I’m grateful for every opportunity to keep growing and learning through this apprenticeship.

Thank you to @michigantradarts for making experiences like this possible.

Khyri and I have spent the year investing in sound expression, cultural identity, representation, and responsibility together by way of tap dance as part of our Michigan Traditional Arts Apprenticeship @michigantradarts so sharing call & response within this offering was especially sweet.

Grateful to Sharese for inviting us into her testimony and for continuing to follow where her gifts lead.

A week of quantum leaps & seeing Detroit with new eyes. 🧘🏽‍♀️

What an honor to have spent this time with the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage’s For the People cohort artists, educators, and beautiful humans from across the country, holding space for how our traditions are taught & shared!

Being with good company over the last seven months refined and amplified necessary ways to articulate her-stories through my own practice FULLY.

After [often], sharing heavy thought sessions with these incredible keepers of the flame, meant we left feeling expanded by the depth of our personhood, and to be witnessed without shrinking. Affirming that all our experiences remain alive not only because they’re worth preservation, but due in large by the gift of respectfully practicing [traditions], remaining critical of how power moves through them, and responsibly paying it forward. We are the vessels.

There is still *much* to process and unpack, but another door has opened inside of me! Peace be upon Ishmael Ahmed, and the ancestors for the evidence and labor of paths made manifest!

I give thanks now and always for fellowship, the @diadetroit , and any reminder that being held in community can change how we see ourselves by making room for one another inside of it.

Home is where the heart is!

#Detroit, with love. 💜

Shanzell Page, the Flint Artist in Residence for the 2025-26 academic year, concluded her campus residency with performances during UM-Flint’s Spring Dance Concert. During her residency, Page held various workshops with UM-Flint students and faculty and collaborated with students to develop and perform her original dance performance, “Seeds & Fruit.” Hear about the impact this experience had on both Page and Ariel Crowder, a sophomore theatre and dance student at UM-Flint. by @zelldoesitwell

One of my greatest joys in this life has easily been watching this young man grow.

When I think about Khyri, so many fun dance memories come to mind! As his mentor, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing not only his development as a dancer, but also the type of extraordinary person he is becoming. Effortlessly intelligent, and genuinely kind, he is inclusive, respectful, hard-working, and determined. When Khyri sets his mind to do something, he follows it through. With the confidence to match...😭 Again and again, I’ve watched him take on new challenges and rise to meet, and exceed every single one of them.

Without question, he LOVES tap dance, and it has very much deepened his commitment over the last seven years! 🕺🏾🪩

But the real MVP’s to whom I’m incredibly grateful for, is the love and unconditional support of his family. The testament of Khyri’s character, values, and gentle nature are a mirror upon the goodness in which they are as well! It has been beautiful to share in part and bear witness to the community surrounding him and the ways they all continue to nurture his growth.

This year, we were recently honored to be selected as recipients of the Michigan Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Award. A program to which I am deeply grateful for, and have the opportunity to share in their advocacy in support of the advancement of #tapdance . While the award recognizes the culture bearer and the value of transmission within tap together, I hope Khyri knows just how proud I am of him and ALL that he has accomplished!

The future is bright, kid. Keep learning, listening, and trusting yourself. @youngreezytaps

I can’t wait to see where your remarkable journey leads next.💜 by @zelldoesitwell

Words cannot describe the blessing and opportunity to impact the community I come from.

Flint has played such an important role in my life, introducing me to some of my greatest influences and experiences that helped shape who I am today. It’s also the place where I’ve experienced some of my greatest challenges.

All of which made this honor even more meaningful.

Like many artists, this season has stretched me beyond what I thought was my capacity. Between building Mindful Movement with Shanzell, creating new work, caregiving for family, and continuing to bet on myself, there were moments when simply deciding to continue felt like an accomplishment.

So to be recognized by my community as a 2026 Unsung Hero is something I do not take lightly.

To be one of fourteen incredible individuals whose work continues to uplift and invest in communities throughout Flint, Detroit, Pontiac, and beyond is so very special and I am truly honored to stand alongside and witness our city holding us up during such challenging times.

Thank you to The Evon Price Memorial Foundation, Whitney, and the nomination committee, for seeing value in the work I do and entrusting me with this honor. Whether scared, prepared, ready, or not. The call remains the same, and that is to SERVE.

For in liberating others, we liberate ourselves.

Most of all, thank you to those who believed in me long before there were any awards, or recognition. Your investment continues to bear fruit.

1 Peter 4:10 says: “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.”

I am proud to be a 2026 Unsung Hero. 🌹 taken in Flint Michigan by @zelldoesitwell
