While the ubiquitous Tank Louis Cartier gets all the historical credit for defining the brand’s elegant silhouette, it wasn’t actually the first. That honor belongs to the Tank Normale, designed in 1917. When Cartier revived the blueprint for the 2023 Privé collection, they brought back the purest, most uncompromising vintage proportions in the catalog.

The yellow gold variant (Ref. WGTA0108) is an absolute masterclass in form. Unlike the elongated, softened lines of later Tanks, the Normale is stubborn, blocky, and aggressively square. The brancards feature sharp, bevel-edged corners and a heavily brushed finish that highlights its block-like architecture, channeling the blueprint of the literal Renault military tanks that inspired Louis Cartier over a century ago.

Cartier paired this structural geometry with a warm satin-silver dial, but the real magic is in the micro-details. It features a stunning, aggressively beveled sapphire crystal that mirrors the exact faceted geometry of the 1917 original, playing with the light right at the edges of the case. At “VII”, you’ll find the secret signature isn’t the standard “CARTIER” text—it subtly reads “1917” in an elegant, micro-engraved nod to the birth year of the legend.

This is an uncompromisingly vintage piece of design geometry that refuses to modernize its proportions for modern tastes - and that, is precisely why this works.

Gem-set watches aren’t typically what I am into nor purchase. But when Omega quietly dropped the Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional “Rainbow” (Ref. 310.55.42.50.52.002), they proved that even a tool watch fundamentally engineered for NASA can pivot into absolute, unapologetic opulence.

The foundation is 18K Canopus Gold™, providing a bright, untarnished backdrop for the real headline: a flawless gradient bezel of rainbow-hued baguette sapphires. The gem-setting was handled entirely by Dress Your Body (DYB), Swatch Group’s haute jewelry manufacture. Sourced strictly to “Collection” standards, each stone guarantees near-flawless clarity and uniform color saturation so the transitions feel fluid rather than pixelated.

While other watchmakers rely on text, logos, and indices to clutter up a design, H. Moser & Cie. continues to ride the wave of aggressive minimalism.

The main talking point is the “Aqua Blue” Grand Feu enamel dial. Moser took their signature fumé gradient and rendered it in glass. It starts with a gold base that is hammered to give it an organic, textured surface, before three different color pigments are applied and fired twelve separate times. The result is impressive, creating a liquid-like depth that darkens toward the edges. This is a masterclass in proving you can deliver top-tier quality through extreme minimalism.

By stripping away the logo and indices, Moser gives the enamel room to breathe, although I may have preferred the small seconds subdial to be ever slightly smaller.

A. Lange & Söhne is usually worshipped for what happens on the back of the case. But the Saxonia Thin ”Copper Blue“ (Ref. 205.086) completely flips that script, staging its flex on the dial.

Crafted from a solid silver disc, the dial is coated with a thin layer of goldstone – a shimmering aventurine glass technique originally perfected by 17th-century Venetian artisans. Infused with microscopic copper crystals, the deep blue surface catches the light like a slice of a literal midnight sky (x50 and x100 zoom shots are included in the post).

At just 6.2mm thick, the watch serves as a reminder that horological mastery doesn’t always require a labyrinth of steel levers and column wheels. Sometimes, it’s just about letting a single, jaw-dropping material take control of the room. Having said this, the caliber L093.1 isn‘t exactly an eyesore either.

While the Datograph gets all the attention, there’s an argument to be made that its sleeker, slightly thinner sibling is the superior daily wear. The 1815 Chronograph in white gold with the black dial (Ref. 414.028) is essentially a “dateless Datograph” – all of the mechanical insanity, packaged into a far more restrained silhouette.

By removing the big date and dropping the case profile to 11mm, Lange created an entirely different beast. The deep black dial is a masterclass in layout. Because the sub-dials are heavily recessed and dropped slightly below the horizontal centerline, the entire layout breathes. Compared to a Patek Philippe chronograph – where the sub-dials often crowd the center or clip the outer tracks – the proportions and visual balance here are simply superior.

Flip it over, and you find the Caliber L951.5. The sheer multi-layered depth is incredible – the slow-beating balance wheel, the sweeping steel flyback levers, and the sharp column wheel.

It’s a masterpiece of mechanical architecture on the back, and pure, stealthy monochrome utility on the front.

The deep blue dial behaves like liquid beneath the sapphire glass. Its vertical satin-brushed finish catches the light in long, gradient streaks, contrasting beautifully with the circular snailing of the recessed small seconds counter. Suspended above it are the brand’s signature, ultra-fine white gold Assegai hands, which requires staggering precision just to hand-set without bending the metal.

Flip it over, and the Caliber FBN 229.01 shifts from understated elegance to pure horological muscle. The micro-rotor features a solid gold pawl-fitted mass, but the real technical marvel is the natural escapement featuring dual escape wheels working directly on the balance. It’s a hyper-efficient powerhouse finished with mirror-polished angles and flawless internal bevels - an execution so definitive it deservingly took home the Horological Revelation Prize at the 2015 GPHG. Pure, unadulterated discretion.

Stripped of any contrasting tones, the solid silver argenté dial integrates seamlessly into the rhodiumed German silver time bridge. It forces you to focus entirely on the architecture of the digital display. Every 60 seconds, the immense mechanical tension stored by the constant-force escapement unloads, snapping the jumping discs forward with a violent, perfectly regulated click.

Flip the watch over, and that cold industrialism evaporates. The caseback reveals the warmth of raw German silver bridges packed with Glashütte ribbing, hand-finished steel springs, and the complex remontoir mechanism required to tame the mainspring’s torque.

A classical layout: a polished platinum case, a deep red carnelian stone dial, and Cartier’s signature Roman numerals. But look closer, and the Santos-Dumont Rewind is a brilliant, completely counter-clockwise optical illusion.

Instead of moving forward, the caliber 230 MC runs entirely in reverse. It is a brilliant tribute to Alberto Santos-Dumont’s roots. The dial is sliced from raw Brazilian carnelian - a direct nod to the aviator’s homeland. More poetically, the hands rotate counter-clockwise because in the Southern Hemisphere, the shadow on a sundial moves counter-clockwise.

A. Lange & Söhne is legendary for its stark, off-center configurations and perfectly proportioned twin-counter chronographs. But this 1815 Rattrapante Perpetual Calendar (Ref. 421.025FE) completely shifts the narrative, opting for a hyper-dense, four-counter layout that channels the spirit of their grand 19th-century pocket watches.

Beneath the solid silver argenté dial sits the Caliber L101.1 – a staggering metropolis of micro-engineering. It manages two of the most technically punishing arenas in watchmaking: the long-term memory of a perpetual calendar and the hyper-kinetic, split-second intervals of a rattrapante. Flip it over, and it’s a three-dimensional landscape of overlapping steel levers, gold wheels, and two distinct column wheels operating on entirely different horizontal planes.

It is a flawless expression of traditional horology executed at the absolute highest level. Which, honestly, makes it a real shame that a masterpiece of this caliber is so often relegated to a “bundle piece” required to unlock an allocation for a limited edition piece.

At first glance, it feels like an anomaly for @urwerkgeneve : a round dial and central syringe hands. But look closer, and the UR-10 Spacemeter is pure, unfiltered sci-fi horology.

Instead of tracking standard time, its three sub-dials measure our literal movement through the universe in kilometers - tracking Earth’s daily rotation and orbital speed around the sun. The entire concept traces back to a 19th-century Gustave Sandoz planetary clock restored by co-founder Felix Baumgartner’s father, Gérard. Once gifted to Felix, that clock became the ultimate bridge between his father’s devotion to classical horology and Urwerk’s quest for disruption.

Beautifully grounding this cosmic display is the execution of the curved aluminum dial. The circular-grained metal substrate gives it a crisp, micro-engineered texture that perfectly contrasts with the technical, sandblasted titanium case. Even when Urwerk adopts “conventional” hands, they are still operating lightyears ahead.

Every eight seconds, the Caliber G-05 manages tapering mainspring torque by winding a tiny secondary hairspring. When that tension unloads, the small governor visible at 9 o’clock spins to regulate the speed.

While I fully expected those mechanical fireworks on the dial, what completely caught me off guard was the view through the caseback. Instead of traditional brass or German silver, the bridges are carved from raw stainless steel and sculpted to mimic the iconic ‘bell gables’ of Dutch architecture. The interplay between those cold, micro-blasted steel facades and the warm, fluid lines of the 1941 red gold case is about as good as independent horology gets.

The 7930V in titanium is, on paper, a brilliant direction. It opts for a completely matte, tactical aesthetic, utilising a textured, grainy finish dial and sharp orange accents to directly channel the spirit of the popular limited ‘Everest’ edition. It’s lightweight and built for purpose.

But once you look closer, the execution stumbles. It’s not just that visibly rough, jagged edge framing the inner bezel ring - even the dial finishing itself falls short of the Holy Trinity standards you expect at this level, in my humble opinion. The multi-textured layout looks great from a distance, but the final refinement and crispness just aren’t there when you examine it closely.

It’s a popular design archetype and quite rightly so, but the lack of final QC restraint from such a prestigious brand is certainly disappointing. Maybe I just got unlucky with this one.
