On April 19, 2015, our holy Ethiopian and Eritrean martyrs were slaughtered by ISIS in Libya for their unwavering devotion to Jesus Christ.

In remembrance of our martyrs, our brother Deacon ZeraYaicob has written this poem that explains the beautiful union of our Ethiopian, Eritrean and Coptic martyrs.

Written By: @zerayaicob

May you hear the word of life, brother Deacon @zerayaicob

May the blessings, prayers, and intercession of our martyrs be with us all. Amen. by @zerayaicob

Passion Week Sketchbook- while full of mistakes and missteps- turned out better than I could have ever imagined. I just hope this doesn't mean I have to do it every year now😭. Very happy with my little angel getting ready to administer Communion to St Demas (or Titus depending on who you ask). Always delighted by the grotesque Ethiopic death-monster (mine isn't anywhere near as weird as most depictions). I wonder why the sun's refusal-to-shine colour is green in the Ethiopic tradition?

ክርስቶስ ተንሥአ እሙታን, Christos anesti, Christ is risen, and so forth. Same(ish) time next year?

"Let's go for a walk", they said.

"We'll climb the hill", they said.

I was gonna make the caption the poem South by Kamau Brathwaite (very niche reference) but the first line is 'But today I recapture the islands' bright beaches' and we never even made it to the beach.

But today we faced off against steep slopes, the wet clay sludge of the river, those stupid thorny palm trees I'm sure were only put there to make travellers think "Oh I'll just lean on this tree" and then you get a million thorns in your hand, but the greatest enemy we fought was our own hubris.

By 3pm (slide 7) it looked like defeat, but we kept walking, and realised the top of the hill was within our grasp (so long as we didn't trust those confounded Google maps).

Sometimes you just have to stop and admire the mighty Atlantic. These fields and hills have been beautiful beyond recall. I won't share which of us said "Seeing all this, I understand colonialism." And then finally, we reached the summit.

We sang songs, read poetry, discussed theology, lamented what passes for our love lives, and traded snacks. 10/10 day. by @zerayaicob

I'm very late but since I see people travelling Europe and churchposting lemme make a quick churchpost (there's a lot of boat content but that wil have its own post)

1, 2. Church of the Holy Trinity, Tobago, and Church of the Saviour of the World, Trinidad. I wanted so badly to go see St Michael's near-finished construction but then I got sick the day after the fast😭

3, 4. Getting to see Amde Brhan's early work was a privilege, especially this Theotokos (Greek for God-bearer) icon in slide 4 which instantly became one of my favourites ever.

5. My dad is a walking masterclass in shot composition, framing and lighting.

6. You can't tell from the photo (or maybe you can) but that day the whole liturgy was in French and I realised my French is actually getting worse so I need a trip to Martinique + Guadeloupe ASAP

7. A father and son explore the ancestral home. The river where dad was born (the river flooded the house when it was full), the aforementioned house (background), the nursery school his mother established (first in Tobago). There's an indescribable experience you get being in a place you're so deeply connected to- Tobago is home now.

8. 3 newly ordained deacons and a nun walk into a church. If I finish the joke Emahoy (title of a nun in the Ethiopian/Eritrean rite) will be mad at me.

9. I speak of the praise of the Virgin not in many words, which would be forgotten, but in few. (said St Cyriacus of Behnesa before proceeding to write the longest anaphora in the liturgy)

"O Virgin you are the ideal and the
prophecy of the prophets,
the favour of the apostles
the mother of martyrs;
the sister of angels ;
the boast of the young men and virgins and the monks who are watchful day and night at your gates."

It's a quick sketch but I think it gets the point across. I promise it looked cooler in my head.

We've all had a good laugh about Vatican 3 (it's still funny) but we are really proud of you Mihret. Forgive me for saying it but you're becoming a bit of a modern day Athanasius.

You didn't rely on your own words, letting God the Holy Spirit "teach you in that same hour what you ought to say" (Luke 12:12).

You invited St Ignatius and St Athenagoras with their scrolls, St Irenaeus with his golden tome, St Clement with the shepherd's staff of his bishopric and St Justin Martyr victorious carrying his cross, you surrounded yourself with the "great cloud of witnesses" (Hebrews 12:1). by @zerayaicob

If you saw my Jonah post you know the drill... google Nicodemus icon - finds out that they're incredibly rare - where are my crayons?

The pressure really turns on when you're doing a New Testament icon. I mean it's God Himself in the flesh, Perfect Man, by the hand of an imperfect artist. He does help us, like He helped John, which really takes the pressure off- He's a good God.

This one only took 5 hours, (angel wings take so much time, not to mention the SCALES!) and I'm actually much happier with it. It was a shaky start but I was complimented on the lineart which was the part I was least confident in so- progress(?)

I don't know about you, but I am READY for the Resurrection. This has been a long Lent...

This is one of those things that feels like it's only interesting to me

I saw a reel from @thehumanityarchive that made me so bewilderingly upset I tried to write a 1 minute response video for Instagram that turned into an 18-minute Youtube video essay, which I then took clips of and turned into a 1 minute response video for Instagram. I can explain.

Last year around the fast of Nineveh I found myself Googling icons (not uncommon for me) of the prophet Jonah. I found a few Coptic ones but most of what I could find was Greek (or Greek-influenced). Icons of Jonah seem to be pretty uncommon as it is- especially compared with other similarly famous Bible stories, but I simply could not find a single Ethiopian Jonah.

This was a curious discovery. Ethiopian iconographers have depicted some extremely niche moments in the Bible and church history, and pretty niche theological concepts, but something as basic as "Jonah and the whale" was nowhere to be found.

This year as I once again typed "jonah ethiopian icon" into the search bar, I had to scroll a bit, but the Eritreans had come through for me! Finally a Jonah icon from the tewahedo tradition. Now I can take it easy right? Right?

Anyway, 8 hours of finger-cramping neck-straining prayer-mumbling hymn-humming work later, I had finished what to my knowledge is 1 of only 2 Ethiopian/Eritrean icons of Jonah in the whale's mouth on the internet- although I'm sure there's more offline in remote churches and monasteries. (I did however find 2 Ethiopian/Eritrean icons of Jonah being spat up on the shore of Nineveh so that's very cool.)

This was a learning experience (the scales) and it gave me an appreciation for both the colour theory and technique (the scales) that goes into iconography (the scales!) Pencils have their obvious limitations, but they can provide surprising fidelity in the right hands (not mine).

And for those of you who don't know Ge'ez, a (very rough) translation: Jonah is saved from the mouth of the beast(?) in order, by his preaching, to save the people of Nineveh.

May God accept our fast

Right now special feature:

Shoutout to the two literal angels who surprised me with these in my inbox🥹

@jade._19 first off- game recognise game😤, thanks for hooking me up with the ✨️money shot✨️ I'm just sorry I couldn't find you after for my selfie collection. Can't wait for your grad post- may we never have to struggle with SPSS again🙏🏾

@dilys_rich you didn't have to especially since you weren't exactly in the front row- but you did and you're amazing for that❤️

It took all my restraint to be normal up there but I didn't want to have fun all over someone else's name being called taken in University Of The West Indies Cave Hill by @zerayaicob

I didn't get everyone but I got a lot- heart poured out in caption below:

1, 2. Can't believe not only did Gav come back for this but we got Alpha too! 🪨 family is forever

3, 4. Choir family is forever- wish I could have gone in the morning and gotten @chelseae.j @j.gil183 and @asha_goodz too but we're all together in spirit thanks to the greatest director ever @dixnne2019 ❤️💛🎵

5. Ryan is so tall I'm almost not in the frame😩

6. I got Cod but couldn't get one with @joshuangriffin

7, 8. The kids🥹 John and Sarah, apparently Solange was there too? but she was too elusive for my camera

9. First class indeed Liana, first class indeed😤

10. Got to be a proper fanboy and rub shoulders with the valedictorian (valedictorian feels like it should have a female counterpart, and I know I'm thinking of victor/victrix ludorum, but how does galedictorian sound?)

Honourable mentions:

Kerry whom I photobombed at the beginning of the festivities, Chantal who wore the heck out of both her dress and her smile, Ferozah who screamed like a mad woman when the guy... did his best calling my name so go easy on him Melissa😂

There's one more VIP I'm saving for the next post so I really hope she doesn't think I've forgotten her😅

Finally I'm including @_petite_dejanae even though you graduated last year because you are synonymous with my UWI experience. You kept my sanity up, my stomach full and my wallet empty and I would not have had a worthwhile university experience without you❤️

There are many more people who deserve a mention here but who I simply do not have the time or memory to appreciate as they are worthy. I hope you appreciated my small role in your lives as much as I appreciated the part you all played in mine. taken in University Of The West Indies Cave Hill by @zerayaicob

You're gonna want sound on for this joke

She tried following me up the rocks and quickly learned the lesson I took a bit too long to learn, then as we're walking back she spots a cave and says "I have an idea"
