This past May, I had the opportunity to travel with my family to my ancestral homeland, Cambodia.

For a country with such a haunting and complicated past, I was surprised by how warm, welcoming, and down to earth the people were. From the peaceful beauty of the countryside in Kampong Cham to standing in awe of the grandeur of Angkor Wat, these are some experiences that photos and words just can’t fully capture.

But the most meaningful part of the trip was meeting my grandmother on my mom’s side for the first time in my life, in the same ancestral village where generations of my family once lived. Being there, surrounded by so much history, both Cambodia’s and my own, made this feel like more than just a trip. It was a chance to reconnect with my roots and a part of myself I’d only ever known from the other side of the world.
