So for my birthday weekend…my Fiancé took me to Black Mountain to visit the town that my Mom grew up in. This trip meant so very much to me and was very emotional and beautiful. Ever have that 1 (or 10) albums that over the years you just randomly gravitate towards? So you listen and you just grow with it? Like over time you truly “get” how/why the piece was influential? Lately that one for me is Kylie Minogue’s “Fever” from 2001. If you don’t know her…she is from Australia and is one of the best selling artists of all time. I have every single album and what’s remarkable is that…a song from 1987 and one from today…Her sweet feminine voice has not changed a single note. Fresh. Modern. Chic. Marilyn Monroe was ready…she had accepted that at 36 if she were to never act again her life wasn’t over! “…Fame I told you it was fickle!” This woman knew her worth. She was an A-List actress during a time when actors were OWNED by studios…she said “I AM NOT PLAYING ANOTHER DUMB BIMBO!” So, the next script sent to her was exactly that. She wrote “TRASH!” on the cover and sent it back to the executives. That should’ve been a death sentence. Fast approaching is a day that I wish never existed. To most it’s just another April day but not me. To me? It’s the day my World abruptly halted. This heart inside of my chest was removed and shattered like a porcelain vase. My best friend, my everything, the one person who carried me until I was ready to breath my own air. To make one woman truly complete and surrounded by love unlike any other. A happy wife and…now a mother. I was hers. I know even in good and bad that her love for me was as pure as fresh snow. Even when angry she would say “Zachary I love you so much it could move mountains…but right now I can’t STAND you!” But, that love grew with each day, with every laugh, with each bouquet of roses I gifted her every single week, and so on. As an adult she is my best friend….she knew me better than I could ever know myself. Who knew almost 3 years ago on a rainy Saturday that she would’ve slid and broke her knee? Or her surgery went perfectly and she was back to her regular silly self making plans for the coming Christmas. Who knew she would collapse into my arms….and within 10 minutes a blood clot DESTROYED an Angel that walked the earth? Death isn’t the end. Nope. She’s around all the time. She comes and talks to me when I dream at night. I’ve said “I love you Mommy” when I’m all alone & suddenly a whirl of Guerlain “Shalimar” swirls around me. I know she’s there. It still doesn’t heal my broken heart, or the sting of tears, or how much I would give my life for hers. When I draw my last breath…I’ve not a single doubt her arms will be open wide and cuddle me again. I’ll be with her and this time I’ll never have to let go. -My Mom grew up in poverty and she made a vow that her child would never want for anything the way that she did. She absolutely kept that promise. The day after her service there was a knock at the door and left was a packaged with my name on it. I was sure it had to be a mistake…inside was this beautiful cashmere cardigan by Yves Saint-Laurent w/ a card that read “See! Your mom knows your taste!
